Dawn is, however, a real girl, Buffy's biological sister, and has real memories of her fictional childhood. She struggles in a very human way when she discovers the truth about her origins and later endures problems with self-harm and kleptomania.
Dawn Summers was a member of the Scooby Gang, sister of Buffy Summers, and daughter of Hank and Joyce Summers. Originally a mystical power of living energy known as the Key, she had been transformed into a teenage human under the protection of the Slayer to hide her from the hell goddess Glorificus.
Buffy discovers that Dawn was originally energy known as the Key, having to do with opening up a dimensional portal. Glory, a god from a hell dimension, wanted to get back to her world and needed the Key to do it. Because of this, monks changed the energy into someone that Buffy would protect--a little sister.
Dawn is percieved is non-human, but in actual fact she isn't just passing as a teenage girl: she is a teenage girl. The monks altered memories and created a personal history for Dawn, but at the same time they made her flesh and blood. Buffy reassures Dawn that they are sisters: they share Summers blood.
A group of monks gave her human form to hide her from the hellgod Glory, placing her with Buffy. Everyone, including Dawn, was given false memories of her having grown up as Buffy's sister, being familiar with her friends and with her status as the Slayer.
Buffy retains her Slayer powers, but her clinical death is enough for the next Slayer to be called. For the next year there are two Slayers in the world: first Kendra, who was called on Buffy's death, and then Faith, who was called when Kendra was killed by Drusilla.
The Slayer line has always been comprised of women. It's clear that the creative choice is a deliberate feminist one made to subvert audience expectations, with Buffy taking the deceptive appearance of the average horror movie victim (blonde, sassy, always falling down, etc.)

On Buffy's 20th birthday, Dawn learns her true identity, and runs away. She meets up with Ben in the hospital, and he realises she is The Key. He is desperate for her to leave before Glory does, and then he transforms, into Glory!
Rupert Giles is a fictional character created by Joss Whedon for the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character is portrayed by Anthony Stewart Head. He serves as Buffy Summers' mentor and surrogate father figure.

In the season two finale "Becoming, Part Two" Joyce discovers Buffy's secret identity as the Slayer when Buffy is confronted by vampires outside her family home and is forced to slay them in front of her mother. Unable to hide the truth any longer, Buffy explains to her mother that she is a vampire slayer.
Buffy's statement to Dawn, "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it," is repeated by Dawn as an encouragement to her sister in "Once More, with Feeling."
The writers had intended for Joyce to be killed off to enact a major change in Buffy, affecting her season's dynamic with her priorities on family and the realization she can't kill everything that could harm the ones she loves.

Spike stood between him and Dawn, but Doc defeated him, stabbing the vampire in the back and throwing him off the tower. Doc proceeded to make shallow cuts on Dawn's stomach, allowing the blood to flow while at the same time keeping the Key alive.
