A child with an affected parent has a risk of 40–60% of developing dyslexia. This risk is increased when other family members are also affected.
Both mothers and fathers can pass dyslexia on to their children if either parent has it. There is roughly a 50% – 60% chance of a child developing dyslexia if one of their parents has it.
First, it's clear that there is a hereditary aspect of dyslexia because it runs in families. About 40 percent of siblings of kids with dyslexia also have reading challenges. And as many 49 percent of their parents do, too. The exact way genetics leads to dyslexia is still not well understood, however.
Those with a parent with dyslexia are at a higher risk than those whose parents do not have the condition. Based on what I've told you so far, you might guess that dyslexia is passed on through your genes. And you'd be partly right. But genes aren't the whole story -- the environment plays a role as well.

People often confuse dyslexia and autism for one another or conflate them for their similarities. But they are two completely different disorders that affect the brains of people in different ways. While dyslexia is a learning difficulty, autism is a developmental disorder.

Dyslexics Struggle with Automated Processes
For dyslexics, however, these automatic processes can be more difficult due to poor memory recall. This may explain why dyslexics' bedrooms are often particularly messy!

But seeing nonexistent movement in words and seeing letters like “d”, “b”, “p”, “q” rotated is common among people with dyslexia.
Dyslexic individuals have a greater ability to learn through experiences and recall information with more efficiency, whether they have actually experienced or simply imagined these experiences. REASONING: Understanding patterns, evaluating possibilities or making decisions.
Left untreated, dyslexia may lead to low self-esteem, behavior problems, anxiety, aggression, and withdrawal from friends, parents and teachers. Problems as adults. The inability to read and comprehend can prevent children from reaching their potential as they grow up.
Trauma Dyslexia can also result after suffering from a stroke or a concussion. While it can affect anyone, Trauma Dyslexia is more often seen in adults than children. On the other hand, dyslexia may also result from emotional trauma.
ADHD and dyslexia are different brain disorders. But they often overlap. About 3 in 10 people with dyslexia also have ADHD. And if you have ADHD, you're six times more likely than most people to have a mental illness or a learning disorder such as dyslexia.
Dyslexia is recognised in Australian under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and under the Human Rights Commission.
They do not usually have the accompanying learning disabilities associated with autism, but they may have specific learning difficulties. These may include dyslexia and dyspraxia or other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy.
People with dyslexia tend to have poor working memory, speed of processing and rapid retrieval of information from long term memory. These weaknesses will also affect maths learning. 60% of learners with dyslexia have maths learning difficulties.
Dyslexia can affect short term memory, so your partner may forget a conversation, a task they have promised to do, or important dates. They may also struggle to remember the names of people they have met or how to get to places they have visited before.
"The dyslexics were using 4.6 times as much area of the brain to do the same language task as the controls," said Richards, a professor of radiology. "This means their brains were working a lot harder and using more energy than the normal children."
