Eddie Was a Quick Fan-Favorite on 'Stranger Things 4'
There was just something about him that people were drawn to. Perhaps it was his grunge/rocker aesthetic, or his nerdy/cool guy persona — whatever it was, Eddie quickly took the Stranger Things universe (and the internet) by storm.
Season 4 introduced Eddie as a student at Hawkins High and the leader of the Hellfire Club, a Dungeon's and Dragon's group. He also was a member of the band Corroded Coffin in which he played electric guitar, and became close friends with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) specifically.
Eddie embodies the metalhead culture of the 80s, from his frizzy hair to his ripped jeans. It's no wonder that such a unique style would immediately appeal to the audience, and when crafting Eddie's aesthetic, there was nothing left to chance.
Sadly, Eddie never had the chance, dying in a moment that could be questioned as a sacrifice in general. Instead, it seems like he was killed for potential shock value or to show that someone who was not the main character did not survive the battle against Vecna.
Matt and Ross Duffer, who created the show, recently said in an interview that Munson is based on Damien Echols, who was controversially convicted, along with two friends, in the 1993 murders of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas.

He made a tearful Dustin promise that he'd look after the Hellfire Club, and lamented that it was finally his year. With his dying breath, Eddie told Dustin that he loved him, and Dustin said that he loved him too.
Producer Shawn Levy has been similarly blunt in why Eddie can't come back, admitting that while he and the creative team were similarly obsessed with him, it's "highly unlikely" he could return.
The final season of the web series "Stranger Things" will be available on Netflix. The 5th edition is expected to have Eddie Munson signing off on this stellar production to leave a lasting impression on the audience.
The kicker of it all? Eddie's final words to Dustin: "I love you, man." If those words weren't already bringing on the waterworks, Dustin tearfully replies "I love you, too." And then Eddie is gone. The impact of those words in that moment could not have been more perfectly heartbreaking.

A recent tweet from the official Netflix Geek account has confirmed that the character of Eddie was specifically inspired by the true story of Damien Echols, otherwise known as one of the "West Memphis Three," after the Duffer Brothers saw the documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.
