"Fibro fog" is the name commonly given to the cognitive problems that can go along with fibromyalgia syndrome. These problems with concentration and memory can lead to confusion, losing your train of thought, or forgetting or mixing up words or details.
Additionally, those with fibromyalgia also frequently report having issues with memory, difficulty in concentration and some mental slowness. Those with fibromyalgia syndrome describe what is called “brain fog,” sometimes called “fibrofog,” in which they experience memory loss or lapses and forgetfulness.
The most common fibro fog complaints include: Forgetfulness and problems remembering new information. Reduced ability to think quickly and efficiently, especially in distracting environments. Difficulty concentrating or feeling alert.
Neurological issues may also adversely affect balance by diminishing proprioception. In addition, some individuals with fibromyalgia report dizziness as a symptom, which can impair balance. According to Dr. Congdon, “Many fibromyalgia medications have dizziness—and sometimes loss of balance—as a common side effect.
Previous studies have observed that fibromyalgia women display a reduced walking speed, which could be a consequence of decreases in stride length and cycle frequency, as well as bradykinesia (Auvinet et al., 2006; Heredia Jiménez et al., 2009).

The most helpful treatment approach for fibromyalgia is a combination of self-care, physical activity and cognitive-behavioral therapy. But medication may also be needed. Many drugs prescribed for fibromyalgia work to turn down “pain volume” in the central nervous system (CNS).
