Frozen squid is a great choice even when fresh is available. Freezing and thawing help break down some of the tough muscle fibers making the squid more tender. Frozen squid is sold as tubes (cleaned bodies) and tentacles or already cut into rings for frying or other recipes calling for rings.
Properly thawing (or slacking) frozen calamari not only preserves the high quality of the product, it ensures that you are getting the full amount of squid that you ordered! It also cuts down on overall cook time in the kitchen.

The important problem in frozen squid and cuttle fish is the yellow discoloration of the tubes and fillets.
