This high-quality cotton thread can be used for hand sewing, in addition to machine sewing. It is perfect for a longarm machine. 100% long-staple mercerized cotton threads are a must for your sewing room.
Choose thread colors that will match or blend with fabrics in your quilt. If using dark fabrics, a dark gray would be a good choice. If using light fabrics, off-white blends well. When making scrap quilts of many colored fabrics, choose a neutral thread, such as medium gray.
50wt Aurifil thread can be used for machine piecing, hand piecing, machine applique, hand needle turned applique, fine needlework, foundation piecing, miniature patchwork, detailed quilting, bobbin lace making, and machine embroidery.
To accomplish this, you'll need to use 40 or 50 wt thread. Many modern quilters prefer big stitch quilting and will use Perle Cotton or a thicker weight thread. To accomplish the look of a much larger, more visible stitch, quilters often choose 8 wt or 12 wt thread.

When hand-quilting a quilt, choose a needle with a large eye that will accommodate medium-weight thread. You may want to select a size 7 or 8, as the shaft will be longer and easier to work through several layers of your quilt. The higher the number, the shorter and finer it is with sewing needles.
– Use a single thread, not a double thread. – Whenever you insert your needle into the quilt back, always make sure you don't push the needle through to the front of the quilt. You only want to catch the back layer of fabric! Otherwise, you will find a lot of little stitches on the front of your quilt.
A 50 weight thread is nice, but you'll still see your stitches. If you really want the stitches to settle into your quilt top, try an 80 or even a 100 weight thread. By choosing a value similar to the colors of your quilt top, you'll be able to add texture without changing the color of your design.
