Generally speaking, you can go about five days without pooping before you run into the risk of serious health issues like fecal impaction, hemorrhoids, or a bowel perforation. That said, there isn't a magic number of days to set a countdown for.
There are a few complications that could happen if you don't have soft, regular bowel movements. Some complications include: Swollen, inflamed veins in your rectum (hemorrhoids). Tears in the lining of your anus from hardened stool trying to pass through (anal fissures).
You don't need to poop every day to be regular. It's normal and healthy to have a bowel movement anywhere between three times a week to three times a day. If you're producing soft, well-formed logs that aren't hard to push out, your bowels are probably in good shape.
Because everyone's body is different and on a different bowel movement schedule, how long one can go without pooping varies. If you are a person that only has three bowel movements per week, you can easily go without pooping for a day or two (or even three), and it likely won't be an issue.
Even if you don't eat, you'll still poop
That's because poo is made up of more than just the food you ingest. "If you don't eat, you can still have feces because the body produces secretions.
Not enough fiber.
You may become constipated if you don't eat enough high-fiber foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Eating a lot of high-fat meats, dairy products and eggs, sweets, or processed foods may cause constipation.
If you are unable to have a bowel movement in one week (six days), it's time to seek help from a doctor. Bacteria from fecal matter that collects around your colon could spread and cause infections in other parts of your body. Rectal bleeding may be one of these signs.
Next time you're reaching for the laxatives spare a thought for those with extreme constipation which can cause serious medical damage. In 2013, a 28-year-old woman from Chembur, India, had to have surgery to remove a “football-sized faecal mass” after 45 days without a bowel movement.
Constipation may also cause the feeling that you constantly need to poop even though you can't. In this case, your bowels may not be empty, but you have trouble getting anything out, despite frequent efforts. Hard, impacted poop stuck in your bowel can irritate it, making it constantly want to evacuate.
After seven days, your constipation may not necessarily be an emergency, but a healthcare provider can prevent the situation from becoming one. Too many days with no bowel movements could lead to fecal impaction, in which stool hardens and bulks up so much that you cannot pass it, Dr. Bedford explained.
In the short-term, you will probably weigh a few hundred grams more if you are constipated because your bowel is full of digested food. Just remember that this is rather insignificant because it hardly impacts your overall body weight.
Fecal impaction often occurs in people who have had constipation for a long time and have been using laxatives. The problem is even more likely when the laxatives are suddenly stopped. The muscles of the intestines forget how to move stool or feces on their own.
"As long as it doesn't cause any discomfort or interfere with quality of life, it's perfectly fine to go once every two weeks. That doesn't make you a sicker person," she says.
When you can't get stool out of your body, it can start to stick together in your intestines. The hardened mass gets stuck and causes a blockage. The squeezing your colon normally uses to push stool out of your body can't move it because it's too large and hard. It can cause pain and vomiting.
Sitting correctly on the toilet and using this technique can help you empty your bowel more easily. Lean forward on the toilet with your forearms resting on your thighs, your legs more than hip width apart and your feet raised up on a small foot stool. Repeat for up to 10 minutes only or until your bowel has emptied.
After you eat, it takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine. Food then enters your large intestine (colon) for further digestion, absorption of water and, finally, elimination of undigested food. It takes about 36 hours for food to move through the entire colon.

Constipation and weight gain are linked, as factors contributing to constipation, bloating and fullness can cause weight gain, but constipation itself is only likely to cause an increase in weight in the short term (a matter of a few hundred grams per day) until your constipation eases.

A person should talk with their doctor if they go more than a week without pooping, if the constipation lasts for more than 3 consecutive months, or if it does not respond to at-home treatment.
