As the ATAR is a percentile, a 99.95 ATAR means that you are in the top 0.05% of your state. Likewise, an ATAR of 99 means that you are in the top 1% of your state.
For instance, to be on target for an ATAR of 99+, you only need to be average in 4U Maths, whereas you would need to be in the top 3% of 2U Maths. The last proviso “that you are a capable of” is very important. There is no point doing a high scaling Maths course if you cannot do it.
An ATAR of 100 is impossible
An ATAR of 80.00 indicates that you sit in the top 20% of your cohort and so on.
That said, to get an ATAR of 90 you must score in the top 5%, so that might be enough to answer your question. It SHOULD be “hard”, for it to be worth anything anyway. As for choosing subjects, choose what you enjoy, as you'll then be prepared to put in the required effort to do your best and maximise your score.
Band 6 = 90 – 100 marks. Band 5 = 80 – 89 marks. Band 4 = 70 – 79 marks.
Approximately 500 students will get a 99 ATAR in states like Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Approximately 100 students score a 99 every year in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, while approximately 40 students achieve this in the ACT.
The ATAR is a number from 0 and 99.95 in intervals of 0.05. The highest rank is 99.95, the next highest 99.90, and so on. The lowest automatically reported rank is 30.00, with ranks below 30.00 being reported as 'less than 30'. Find out more about how ATARs are calculated.
In general, most students consider an ATAR of below 30 to be bad. This is because the actual ATAR score is not reported for an ATAR less than 30, it is just stated as <30. Still, this ATAR may be good and all that is required for a student who wants to pursue a trade or enrol in TAFE.
Thus the minimum ATAR to realistically get an interview offer is around 99.50 or higher.
The highest ATAR that you can achieve is 99.95, which effectively means that a student ranked better than 99.95% of students in their cohort. 3. What is the average ATAR score? The average ATAR is usually around 70.00.
Re: What does it take to get an ATAR of approximately 99.95? Studying for more than 5hr-8hr is required to memorise really well and achieve outstanding results.
Ravenswood student Maria Yang is one of the 48 students in NSW who has received the perfect ATAR of 99.95 in 2022.
Parramatta High student Ved Khanolkar said his mum and dad were “left speechless” after he scored an ATAR of 99.5.

One Flinders student, Laura Webb, achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95.
In fact, a study of students at Victoria University showed many low-ATAR students achieved high marks in their first year, particularly when they were appropriately supported by the university to succeed.
Ethan Tan, 15, became the youngest student ever to get the highest possible ATAR of 99.95 on Friday.
17 per cent of students received an ATAR of 90.00 or above, 33.9 per cent received an ATAR of at least 80.00 and 50.3 per cent at least 70.00. The median ATAR was 70.15 this year, slightly higher than in 2019.
The average ATAR is usually around 70.00.
But because some students leave school early and the ones who stay on to receive an ATAR are a smaller, more academically able group, the average ATAR is higher. ATARs are calculated in each state to reflect a student's rank against other students in their state.
For most people, a good ATAR score is 80.00.
Eighty is the minimum ATAR for entry into most programs at the Australian National University. ANU has the fourth highest undergraduate admission standards in Australia. With a score of 80.00, you're in a strong position and have plenty of options.
54,308 students were eligible for an ATAR. This is 533 fewer than in 2021. 48 students received the top ATAR of 99.95. Of these students, 19 were female and 29 were male; they came from a mix of government and non-government schools and studied a wide range of courses.
When you complete your VCE, your ATAR will be calculated using your Year 12 internal and external assessments. So, your Year 11 marks won't affect your ATAR score!
In Australia, the lowest minimum ATAR required by a medical program is an ATAR of 90 (Monash University) or adjusted ATAR of 90 (University of Adelaide). If you're a rural student, you could also apply to La Trobe's medical program, which has a minimum unadjusted ATAR requirement of 80.
In general, maths and science subjects are scaled up and arts subjects are scaled down. English and business subjects will usually remain the same. There is a misconception that this scaling is based on how difficult the subject is but, in general, subjects are designed to offer the same level of challenge.
