Peeing frequently at night could be a sign of an underlying condition. Or, it could mean you're drinking too much before you go to bed. It might be a good idea to make some simple lifestyle changes like eliminating beverages two to three hours before bedtime.
Normally, the amount of urine your body produces decreases at night. This allows most people to sleep 6 to 8 hours without having to urinate. Some people wake up from sleep more often to urinate during the night.
Drink plenty of fluids during the day (especially water), but limit fluids 2-4 hours before you go to sleep. Be sure to limit alcohol and caffeine (soda, tea and coffee). Manage your use of diuretics. If you have to take a diuretic, then do so at least 6 hours before you go to sleep.
Producing Excess Urine at Night

Peeing more than once during the night (nocturia) can be caused by a number of factors, including bladder issues, a sleep disorder, lifestyle factors, or an underlying medical condition. Reach out to a healthcare provider for an evaluation if you're losing sleep due to nocturia.
When should I see my healthcare provider? Nocturia is treatable — it's not a condition you need to live with. Contact your healthcare provider if you find yourself waking up to pee more than once or twice per night. It may be a sign of something else going on and the frequent wake-ups may leave you feeling exhausted.
Frequent Urination Could Be Related to Diabetes
This results in more urine production and increased urinary frequency and urgency, called polyuria. Some people may notice they have to get up every couple of hours during the night to urinate and that they produce more urine when they do go.
“Our study indicates that if you need to urinate in the night – called nocturia – you may have elevated blood pressure and/or excess fluid in your body,” said study author Dr Satoshi Konno, of the Division of Hypertension, Tohoku Rosai Hospital, Sendai, Japan.
That said, if you're visiting the bathroom more often than that, it could either mean that you're drinking too much water, coffee or tea, or something more serious. Urinating more than 7-10 times a day could be a sign of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
When there's too much sugar in your blood, which happens if you have diabetes, your kidneys have to work harder to get rid of it. This forces them to make more urine. The process doesn't stop just because you're snoozing. Diabetes can also damage your kidneys or bladder.
You may pass urine more often than usual because of: Infection, disease, injury or irritation of the bladder. A condition that causes your body to make more urine. Changes in muscles, nerves or other tissues that affect how the bladder works.
“It's normal for men as we age to get up to go,” says urologist James Ulchaker, MD. “In fact, it's normal for a 60-year-old man to get up once, a 70-year-old man to get up twice and an 80-year-old man to get up three times a night.”
Pale or transparent yellow urine
Diabetes insipidus is a condition in which the body produces excess urine. It can cause people to pass large quantities of light-colored urine every time they urinate. It can also cause people to feel very thirsty, leading them to drink fluids frequently.
An increased risk of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence was observed with vitamin D deficiency (odds ratio [OR] = 4.46; 95%CI, 1.03–19.33; P = 0.046 and OR = 1.30; 95%CI, 1.01–1.66; P = 0.036, respectively).
Urge incontinence.
You have a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine. You may need to urinate often, including throughout the night. Urge incontinence may be caused by a minor condition, such as infection, or a more severe condition such as a neurological disorder or diabetes.
The Cleveland Clinic recommends sleeping on your side if you have an overactive bladder so that there's no pressure on your bladder. You can also elevate your legs during the night to keep the need to urinate at bay.
