Ignoring a behavior may not always work (especially when he finds another reward other than your attention), but it can serve as a trick to keep in your back pocket for when you're dealing with a challenging dog.
You won't hurt your dog's feeling if you ignore it :) I'm talking about selective ignoring of unwanted behaviours. Some, of course, cannot be ignored, and we may need to intervene in a calm way free from aggressive intent. I also advocate the ignore upon homecomings.
This is well-intended but incomplete advice – if you only ignore the behavior, your dog will probably never learn to stop barking, jumping, or pulling. Just ignoring unwanted dog behaviors misses an important piece of teaching your dog what TO do instead. Dogs learn by association.

While it's important for our dogs to learn how to be independent and content spending time alone, attention is important. Not enough attention can lead to behavioral problems, which can be really frustrating for you and your dog.
Attention-seeking dog behaviour is common – and is a totally normal survival mechanism in puppies who rely totally on the care of their mother but as adult dogs, excessive jumping, pawing or barking is difficult to live with and can become annoying.
What I am saying though is that dogs who are ignored when you come home, particularly if they suffer with separation anxiety can become depressed. Despite people still telling us that dogs don't have the same psychological capacity as people, clinical depression is not inherently human. Dogs can get it too.
There are some tell-tale signs. Dogs often engage in destructive behavior when feeling neglected, like excessive digging, chewing and scratching. Another way they might express their feelings of frustration are through barking and howling fits, particularly at night.
Leaving Your Dog Alone Is Not The Answer
A common myth surrounding separation anxiety is that by somehow ignoring your dog, or by forcing them to be alone for long periods of time, they simply will get used to it, and the disruptive behavior will stop. This couldn't be further from the truth.
A different set of chemicals is released when you feel hatred or resentment towards someone and your dog can sense that too! Be careful – if they know you don't like someone, they may try to protect you from them which could result in some bad behavioural changes in your pooch.
Time-outs should last for no more than 2 minutes maximum but always start with 30 seconds. If the dog is ignored for too lengthy a period of time, he will simply forget what behavior caused this consequence and you will have taught him nothing. Your timing is VERY important when doing a time-out.
If your dog does not appear to get upset after you have left, then you can continue to say goodbye to them when you leave. If you have determined that your dog does get upset in your absence, it is best to seek professional help right away.
When you first arrive home, ignore your dog completely. This means you do not look at them, do not speak to them, do not pet them. For some pups, even telling them “no,” pushing them off, or asking for a Sit right away is rewarding for them, because they are still getting attention from you!
However, allowing your dog to sleep in your bed may encourage a problem that's already there. For example, sleeping in bed with you can reduce anxiety in dogs, but can also exacerbate separation anxiety in the long term as your dog becomes used to having you as support every night.
If they miss you more than they can bear, your pooch will offer you a few telltale signs. Chewing on your possessions, crying when you leave, and staring at the door after you've gone are all key indicators.
When we say “no” to a toddler or a dog, it usually means “stop what you're doing right now” but a dog doesn't know that. It knows you're not happy – your body language and tone of voice will convey that. But as far as we know, it doesn't realise why and it certainly doesn't know how to respond.
On average, you can expect to spend at a minimum, 1 - 2 hours each day on providing dedicated attention for your dog. This can be in the form of a walk, play, enrichment activities, training or general cuddle time. Dogs are pack animals so most of them love attention and company.

Dogs are social creatures and can very easily get bored if not provided with enough attention. Bored dogs will find interesting things to do, but what's great fun for the dog can often be destructive to your home and even dangerous for your pet.
Your dog's SOS signals
Generally, there are three primary ways that you can tell when a dog needs your help: physiological changes, behavioral changes, and signs of pain or discomfort.
“Too much affection can also mean that you can give your dog positive cues at the wrong time to back up bad behaviors, which can lead to behavioral problems like separation anxiety, vocalizing for attention, and/or damaging items in the home to get attention,” Dr. Nelson explains.
Dogs, like people, respond best to positive reinforcement. Trying to curb your dog's more aggressive behaviors by rewarding only positive behaviors can help train those aggressive instincts away. If he is calm for a while or behaves well during an encounter with guests or other dogs, reward him with a treat.
