Using vinegar in laundry will whiten, brighten, reduce odors, and soften clothes without harsh chemicals. Vinegar is inexpensive, and it's safe to use in both standard and high-efficiency washers. When buying vinegar for laundry, choose distilled white vinegar.
There are many uses for vinegar in laundry, including stain removal, odor elimination, and mold and mildew eradication. Vinegar can also be used as an alternative to commercial fabric softeners.
So is vinegar safe to use in your dishwasher or washing machine? Here is what I found: It is safe for natural rubber seals and any parts made from polypropelene, silicone, fluorocarbon, and virgin Teflon, as well as butyl synthetic rubber seals.
Step 1 : Cleaning the rubber seals.
To properly clean the seals of your washing machine, prepare a mixture of hot water, white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda in your basin. Run your sponge over the most accessible areas and finish off with the finishes with your toothbrush.
Mix one part bleach with four parts water in the spray bottle. Use the spray bottle to spray and wipe away any remaining bleach areas from the rubber seal. If you reach under the washing machine door seal and run your hand across the rubber, it is possible to feel the black sludge that has developed there. This is indicative of mould or mildew.
Rubber. Rubber parts aren't just for the dishwasher: There are also rubber gaskets and hoses in your refrigerator and other appliances throughout the house. As a general rule, wherever you find rubber, keep the vinegar away. The vinegar's acid can eat away at rubber just as it does natural stone.
