Metamucil is an OTC laxative, known as a bulk-forming laxative. Its active ingredient is psyllium husk. Psyllium husk is plant-based and a natural fiber derived from the Plantago ovata plant.
Metamucil and Citrucel are recommended as the best treatment in most cases of constipation because their mechanisms of action are very similar to how the digestive system normally works. After constipation resolves, Metamucil and Citrucel can still be used as fiber supplements to promote good digestive health.
This medication is used to treat constipation. It increases the bulk in your stool, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestines. It also works by increasing the amount of water in the stool, making the stool softer and easier to pass.
The active ingredient, psyllium husk, is a soluble viscous fibre that absorbs and holds moisture. This causes the psyllium to swell, supplying the necessary bulk to help form an easily eliminated stool. Metamucil will not cause immediate evacuation but generally produces an effect in 12 to 72 hours.
There's no evidence that daily use of fiber supplements — such as psyllium (Metamucil, Konsyl, others) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) — is harmful. Fiber has a number of health benefits, including normalizing bowel function and preventing constipation.
Start with one serving daily of Metamucil at first, then gradually increase to your desired intake. You may experience gas or bloating in the first few days as your body adjusts to the added fiber. This is normal and should go away as your body gets used to the added fiber.
If the daily recommended amount of fluid is not drunk, then Metamucil could cause severe constipation, especially in people who are already dehydrated. Some products may contain sugar, sodium, or phenylalanine (phenylketonurics should avoid).
In general, bulk-forming laxatives, also referred to as fiber supplements, are the gentlest on your body and safest to use long term. Metamucil and Citrucel fall into this category.
You should not take Metamucil if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if Metamucil is safe to use if you have ever had: stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting; trouble swallowing; or.
Benefiber and Metamucil are not the only name brand supplements to relieve constipation on the market, and some people may find they like other brands better. Two popular alternatives are Citrucel and Miralax. Miralax is not a fiber-based supplement.
To take Metamucil for occasional constipation, put one serving into an empty glass. Add at least 8 ounces (a full glass) of cool water. Stir briskly and drink promptly. If the drink is thicker than you prefer, add more water and stir, this also offers a lighter flavor profile.
Insoluble fiber is the most beneficial for softening stools. It does not dissolve in water and helps food pass more quickly from the stomach to the intestines. Wholewheat flour, nuts, beans, and vegetables, such as cauliflower, green beans, and potatoes all contain insoluble fiber.

Osmotic laxatives such as polyethylene glycol (brand name Miralax) are well-tolerated by most older adults, and can be used daily.
Dulcolax® Stool Softener is a stimulant-free laxative made to relieve occasional constipation. Each tablet contains 100 mg of the #1 doctor-recommended stool softener ingredient — docusate sodium.
Side effects of stool softeners may include stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. Contact your doctor if the medicine doesn't help relieve your constipation within one week.
While they only are intended for short-term relief of constipation, using a daily stool softener long-term probably is not harmful.
Do not take psyllium for longer than 7 days in a row without a doctor's advice. Using a laxative too often or for too long may cause severe medical problems with your intestines. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse.
Metamucil is best known for its psyllium husk powders. You can also take Metamucil capsules and thins to get psyllium husk fiber into your diet. If you want to add psyllium husk into your morning or nighttime routine, powders may be the route for you.
Five Metamucil Capsules are approximately equivalent to one serving of Metamucil Powder. Depending on the benefits one wants to get from the product, one can use a different number of Capsules. For adding some dietary fibre to the diet, one can take as little as 2 Capsules per serving.
Metamucil typically takes 2-3 days to work and it should not be taken before bed (8). You should always follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to take it.
Too much fiber all at once might cause gas, which can trigger your symptoms. If fiber is helping, you may add some fiber supplements such as Metamucil or Citrucel. However occasionally fiber can make your symptoms worse. Then you should try to avoid fiber as much as possible.
