Padmé Amidala (portrayed by Natalie Portman) is the wife of Anakin Skywalker, the mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, the daughter-in-law of Shmi Skywalker, the mother-in-law of Han Solo, and the maternal grandmother of Ben Solo. She served as Queen of Naboo, and later as a Senator for her planet.
Padmé Naberrie was born to humble parents, and was identified early as one of Naboo's best and brightest. She devoted herself to civic duty, and was elected Queen of Naboo at age 14. Padmé adopted Amidala as her name in office.
She secretly marries Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, then later dies while giving birth to twins Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Anakin's fear of losing Padmé serves as the catalyst in driving him to the dark side of the Force and becoming Darth Vader.
Organa witnessed Palpatine's Declaration of Empire with horror, and began working in secret with Mon Mothma to create a network of resistance cells opposed to the Empire. He and his wife Breha adopted Leia, the orphaned infant daughter of Padmé and Anakin Skywalker, and raised the girl as their own.
But although fans know Padmé quite well, there's always more to learn. Starting with her name, Amidala is not Padmé's true surname -- rather, it was a name she used during her time as queen of Naboo. This was to protect her true identity, and the identity of her family.

Overview. After her death in childbirth on Polis Massa, Amidala's body was returned to Naboo for the proper funeral rites. In order to hide the fact that Amidala's twins survived, her body was prepared to still appear pregnant. Her maternal grandmother, Ryoo Thule, oversaw Amidala's funeral, as per Naboo custom.
This is confirmed later in the movie when Obi-Wan informs Padme that Anakin killed them. Both are torn apart with hurt and confusion, trying to make sense of something so terrible.
To hide the birth of her twins from both Darth Vader and more importantly Palpatine. The fact that Amidala had given birth to twins was a secret known only to a few after her death. The mortician Commodex Tahn used a hologram to make her still appear pregnant during her funeral.
