1883 ended its first season in brutal fashion. The Yellowstone prequel starring Faith Hill and Tim McGraw wrapped its 10-episode season by killing off both their onscreen daughter, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), and Pinkerton agent Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott).
'1883' Reaches a Strangely Happy Ending
Elsa, who had decided to see her family in Oregon before returning to be with Sam, may be dead, but just as her spirit narrates the series (and the following 1923 series), so it's implied that her spirit reunites with Sam's in the afterlife.
Joel and Ellie may have made the cut, but their Kansas City companions Henry and Sam unfortunately meet a tragic end. It's a continuing trend in The Last of Us for supporting characters to die, only just after creating a bond with the main characters and viewers.
TV-goers were left dead in their tracks when screenwriter Taylor Sheridan killed off Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) and Pinkerton agent Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott).
Sam and Elsa did get their happily ever after, at least in Elsa's afterlife — the joys surround her that she didn't get enough of in this life, and she'll be met by her loved ones when their time comes.
And because this is one of the few shows in which that phrase might be taken literally, allow me to clarify: Elsa gets married in Sunday's episode. The groom? Handsome Sam, the Comanche man she met [checks notes] last episode.
Yellowstone fans know that Duttons have been buried in the same spot in Montana for over a century. The Dutton family cemetery makes more sense after 1883 revealed that Elsa was the first person to be buried on the land.
Does Elsa get pregnant in 1883? The Yellowstone prequel never clarified whether Elsa (Isabel May) and Ennis (Eric Nelsen) consummating their relationship in 1883 season 1, episode 5 “The Fangs of Freedom" resulted in Elsa getting pregnant.
Later, Elsa and Sam spend the night together which shows this isn't a flash in the pan romance, and that the pair are serious about their relationship. Elsa tells her mother just as much the next morning, but agrees to ride with them to Oregon before eventually returning to Sam.
The group is led by Sam Elliot's character, Captain Shea Brennan, who lost his wife and daughter to smallpox in the first episode.

Sam's Cause of Death: Stabbed by Jake Talley, another one of Azazel's special children. Resurrected By: Dean, who made a deal with a crossroads demon to bring back his brother in exchange for his own life in “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two” (Season 2, Episode 22).
However, even though Dean loses the bet, Death does bring Sam's soul back and creates a mental wall within Sam's mind to deal with the memories of Hell before he forces it back into Sam's screaming body. Death returns from Lucifer's Cage with Sam's soul.
Why did Sam turn infected in The Last of Us Episode 5 on HBO? Despite Ellie meaning well, her blood alone was proven to not be enough to cure somebody of the Cordyceps infection. This is because blood on its own, leaking from a self-inflicted wound, is not scientifically able to cure a virus.
Sam. A Comanche warrior who the Duttons met along the wagon trail in 1883, Sam professed to have taken his name from the man who killed his wife. He later began a romance with Elsa Dutton, and the two married without official ceremony.
Elsa was also planning to split from the group to stay with Sam, but after many goodbyes, everyone decided they were going to Oregon anyway. Even Elsa decided to leave her boyfriend so she could find out where Oregon was, while planning to return to the plains in June to reunite with him.
When Anna finds Elsa, Elsa mistakenly freezes Anna's heart again, Kristoff takes her to the trolls to thaw that out, and they're all like “only an act of true love can do that.” Kristoff races back to Arendelle so that Hans can give Anna a kiss and break the spell, but Hans just leaves Anna because he wants her to die.
After challenging Elsa to a horse race and losing to her and Lightning, Sam congratulates her: “I think you're the lighting. Lighting with the yellow hair.” When Elsa asks why he calls himself Sam, he replies, “That was the name of the man who killed my wife. I know because I made him tell me.
The two then ride off where Sam tells Elsa that he chose his name after a man named Sam killed his wife; he wanted to take the man's name after taking the man's life. (Sam killed Sam.) Sam gives Elsa a nickname, “Lightning Yellow Hair.”
Elsa Dutton - John's great aunt
Elsa is the sister of John Dutton Senior, but her relationship with Costner's character is more complicated. As John Dutton Junior came into the mix, Elsa is Costner's character's great aunt.
Spencer Dutton
Spencer is sibling to Elsa and John Sr. He is a former soldier-turned-big game hunter who is called home from Africa to help his family defend their land. While in Africa, Spencer meets and falls in love with Alex (Julia Schlaepfer), and they return to Montana together to help his family.
Margaret Dutton
She served as a nurse in the Civil War in which James fought in. She was the mother to three children (whom we meet in 1883), Elsa, John, and Spencer.
Elsa Dutton was born on April 9, 1865, and is 5' 9” tall. She sadly passed away in 1883 at the age of 18 from an infection from a dirty arrow. Elsa Dutton is the daughter of James and Margaret and sister of James and Spencer, though she never gets to meet him.
1883, which concluded its first season in February 2022, featured Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the central Duttons, who claim the infamous patch of Montana wild known as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch after the tragic death of their daughter, Elsa.
In a flash-forward to the Spring, we see that Josef is alive and working his new piece of free land in Oregon while Thomas, Noemi, and her two sons settle nearby in the Willamette Valley. Shea also makes it to Oregon and heads to the coast to see the ocean to fulfill his dead wife's dream.
They stopped under some trees and she informed her father: ”This is the spot.” As James cradled her, the two shed tears while sharing their precious memories and taking her final breath, Elsa said: “I know what it is. I'm not scared. I'm not scared, daddy.”
