The Nevada commission gave slap fighting some much needed legitimacy when it unanimously sanctioned the sport in October and a month later awarded White a license to promote it.
Although competitors have held unregulated matches in small venues for years, the contests received a major stamp of approval in October when the Nevada Athletic Commission sanctioned it as a sport. Slap fighting got even more exposure earlier this year when Warner Bros.
Slap fighting is where two opponents stand at arm's length from each other and take turns slapping each other in the face. They are not allowed to move, flinch, or defend themselves in any way. Mr White says slap fighting is safer than boxing or mixed martial arts because each contestant usually takes only three blows per bout. In boxing, Mr White said, that number could be 400 or more, and that did not include the shots taken during sparring.
But even if you want to differentiate between slap and palm strike, a slap in the right place can be a dozen times more damaging than a punch.
