Squidward exhibited many of the symptoms and hallmarks of major clinical depression. At the Krusty Krab, he was always tired and regularly regretted getting out of bed and going to work. He was apathetic about his own existence, and the existence of others.
The SpongeBob mental illness theory labels Patrick as the representation of intellectual disability, while Sandy Squirrel has Borderline Personality Disorder. Sandy's “diagnosis” comes from her extreme mood swings and impulsivity, which leads to risky activities.
Underlying Mental Illness
Pearl is undoubtedly a psychopath. She enjoys hurting defenseless beings; befriending predatory beings excites her; she relishes in the idea of her parents demise to perpetuate her goals, and she impulsively destroys anything obstructing said goals.

Spongebob can't read social cues very well. It's hard for the guy to know when he's bothering someone, and he's not very good at reading the emotions of others.
The wacky, zany SpongeBob is supposedly a manifestation of ADHD, while Patrick Starr is apparently meant to represent Down Syndrome and Squidward is a stand-in for depression. Meanwhile, Mr Krabs is Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Plankton is theorised to be a representation of Bipolar disorder.

Mr. Krabs has severe OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, due to his obsession with earning money and saving it. His obsession affects his everyday life, for he is repeatedly counting it and guarding it.
Krabs starts to tease him. Larry falls into a deep depression until the end of the episode, when SpongeBob helps him get back into shape.
Sandy Cheeks has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) - Sandy has mood swings in many epis. One moment she'd blasting the next moment she'd be cool. Plankton has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) - Plankton has always tried to put Krusty Krab down and make Chum Bucket the best.
Still, it's a different way to interpret what SpongeBob does and says, and it could explain other things about him too, particularly his weird verbal tics and his use of militaristic terms, but in the end, SpongeBob SquarePants is meant to be taken lightly, so it's highly unlikely that he really is a war veteran with ...
