The movie is based on young adult fiction with themes and disturbing scenes that make it unsuitable for most children under 15 years, although younger children might have read the book.
This is my 11-year-olds favorite movie, but if your kids are more sensitive or easily scared, don't watch it. (There is a scene where a baby is killed and also a scene with war, along with a scene where a main character is almost killed) I don't think this movie deserves its PG-13 rating at all.

The Giver is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for a mature thematic image and some sci-fi action/violence. Violence: Soldiers on the battlefield are afraid. They shoot and kill one another (Gun shots and hits are shown, but no blood).
The first notable case of banning The Giver was in California in 1994. At the time, parents complained of violent and sexual passages. Today, the book sits on the banned list due to potentially difficult topics of violence and infanticide and unsuited for the age group.
Jonas. The eleven-year-old protagonist of The Giver. Sensitive and intelligent, with strange powers of perception that he doesn't understand, Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory for his community when he turns twelve.
This movie has kissing and murdering in it.
The Giver author, Lois Lowry, wrote the book for adolescent and teenage readers. Since the book contains adult content, some people want it removed from schools and public libraries so that children cannot access the text. While the book has been challenged thousands of times, it remains in most schools and libraries.
Lowry includes mentions of sex, infanticide, suicide, starvation, and euthanasia in order to show the power of the book's main themes of suffering and individuality. The first notable banning case was in California in 1994. Parents complained of violent and sexual passages, and the book was temporarily banned.
Jonas is an 18-year-old boy whose best friends are Asher and Fiona. On graduation day, Jonas is told that he will become the next Receiver of Memory and will progressively receive memories of history from his predecessor, the Giver.
Jonas' young age makes him the prefect protagonist for a story in which he discovers the depth of human emotion as he simultaneously expands his vocabulary. By making the movie Jonas slightly older — 16 years old — the film loses some of the innocent quality of the Lowry's hero.
We also checked other leading streaming services including Prime Video, Apple TV+, Binge, Disney+, Google Play, Foxtel Now, Netflix and Stan. The Giver is not available on any of them at this time. Please let us know if we got anything wrong?
This is the list of the most banned books in the first part of the 2022-2023 school year, according to the PEN America Index of School Book Bans. Gender Queer: A Memoir remained at the top of the list, as it was in the 2021-2022 school year, joined this time by Flamer.
One of California's largest industries at the time was logging. Parents were concerned that teachers were “brainwashing” their children and were fearful the children would start an uprising against the logging industry. Because of this, “The Lorax” was banned in a Laytonville, California public school.

Due to themes of death and the fact that the main characters are talking animals, a parent group in Kansas sought to ban the book from their students' school libraries.

Age Appropriate for: 13+. Much like the films based on Stephenie Meyer's previous “Twilight” series, “The Host” has a good amount of violence (mostly hand-to-hand fighting and beating, and a character's suicide) and some alien possession. Also some kissing, embracing, and cursing.
