We finally saw the Mandarin brought to life by the legendary Leung. He was shown as an immortal being who has wreaked chaos for thousands of years. He came in conflict with his son Shang-Chi, the first Asian superhero in MCU, and was the primary villain.
After the fake Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3, we saw the real Mandarin appear in Shang-Chi as the leader of the Ten Rings, the same organization that kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was an underrated Marvel project that took a rather obscure superhero and brought him onto the main stage of the MCU. The film was reasonably successful and contained a few cameos from other Marvel films.
The Ten Rings Were Responsible For Creating Iron Man
Obadiah Stane had been secretly arming the Ten Rings for years, and struck a deal with them to kill Tony Stark on his behalf. Instead, a Ten Rings cell based in Afghanistan took Stark prisoner, and attempted to force him to make weapons for them.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings directly addresses the controversial Mandarin plot twist in Iron Man 3, making it even better by tying the two films together.
It turns out everything was fake, and Iron Man 3's Mandarin was actor Trevor Slattery played by Ben Kingsley. As Shang-Chi introduces Wenwu, the real Mandarin, Iron Man 3 should definitely be on your watchlist.
And in fact, the reason the Wenwu version of the Mandarin was used as Shang-Chi's father is because, in the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu—a character who has become an eponym for racist Asian caricatures. Rewriting the past is a staple of comic books, not just a necessity but part of their strengths.
Wenwu sacrificed himself to protect Shang-Chi from the Dweller, passing the Ten Rings down to him, before the Dweller then drained his soul from Wenwu's body and killed him.
However, in a surprise twist, "Iron Man 3" revealed that The Mandarin was actually just a down-on-his-luck actor named Trevor Slattery who struggled with a drug addiction, legal problems, and carried himself with a nonchalant disposition that was nothing like The Mandarin at all.
The organization appears in the films Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Iron Man 3 (2013), Ant-Man (2015), and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021); as well as the One-Shot All Hail the King (2014) and the miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022).
Tony Leung fills the role of Wenwu, who also goes by the name of The Mandarin. In the story of the film, Wenwu trained his son Shang-Chi to eventually be part of the family business – the criminal Ten Rings organization – but Shang-Chi turned his back on his father and moved to America.
During the Marvel NOW! relaunch, Shang-Chi joins the Avengers after being recruited by Captain America and Iron Man.
Doctor Strange 2 will include Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, and introduce Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez to the MCU, but Shang-Chi won't be making an appearance. That said, Liu is excited for his next adventure in the live-action Marvel franchise.
Previously, Iron Man 3 was going to introduce the Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley. But it turns out Kingsley's character was just an actor called Trevor Slattery, and the real Mandarin was still elusive. Kingsley returned as Trevor in Shang-Chi. We finally saw the Mandarin brought to life by the legendary Leung.
Casualties. The Kidnapping of Tony Stark was the abduction of Tony Stark carried out by the Ten Rings through orders given by Obadiah Stane, whose intention was to kill Stark after the latter tested the Jericho missile in Afghanistan.
Their similarities would bring them together, as both Shang-Chi and Iron Fist are regularly featured in the anthology series The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. When the two would eventually meet in Master of Kung Fu Annual #1, they established an immediate mutual respect for one another.
Why did Marvel decide to revise the Chinese characters? The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 is a fake. Neither the actor Trevor Slattery nor the pissed off Aldrich Killian were the Mandarin. That's not a retcon or something, it was made clear in the movie itself.
(Iron Man 3) The Mandarin to Tony Stark. The Mandarin, also known by his real name as Trevor Slattery, is the main, later tertiary antagonist of Iron Man 3. His identity as the Mandarin was created by Killian and was used as a puppet to hide Killian from being suspected by the US Government.
Mandarin's first confrontation with Iron Man happened when he tried to use Stark's weapons against the American government. Iron Man investigated and managed to stop Mandarin, igniting a rivalry between them. This led to various schemes, with Mandarin managing to outwit Iron Man and vice versa.
While the reasons aren't clear, “Shang-Chi” may be a victim of the low point in U.S.-China relations. China is also pushing back against Western influence, with increasingly vocal nationalists denouncing foreign books and movies and the teaching of English.
The Mandarin is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is the archenemy of Iron Man.
Early Life. The daughter of Zheng Zu and Jiang Li and the younger sister of Shang-Chi, Shi-Hua was raised alongside her brother at their father's Hunan retreat. During their childhood, the two siblings accidentally entered one of their father's forbidden laboratories against his orders.
Xu Wenwu (Chinese: 徐文武), better known as the Mandarin, is the overarching antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Iron Man trilogy and the main antagonist of the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
According to Ed Brubaker, the copyright issue was one of the reasons for using the Mandarin as Shang-Chi's father. In the main continuity, the Mandarin had a son called Temugin who was trained in a monastery in martial arts and philosophy, his name is inspired by the real name of Genghis Khan, ancestor of the Mandarin.
That being said, the abilities and power they granted Shang-Chi's father were immense, giving him immortality and the ability to conquer all of his foes.
