The queen is the founder of the colony, and her role is to lay eggs. Worker ants are all female, and this sisterhood is responsible for the harmonious operation of the colony. Their tasks range from caring for the queen and the young, foraging, policing conflicts in the colony, and waste disposal.
Besides their incredible strength, almost all of these species have something in common: queens. Ants adhere to a caste system, and at the top is the queen. She's born with wings and referred to as a princess until she takes part in the nuptial flight, mates with a male ant, and flies off to start her own colony.
A queen ant (formally known as a gyne) is an adult, reproducing female ant in an ant colony; generally she will be the mother of all the other ants in that colony.
With all the great variety in ant species commonly found in Iowa they do have one thing in common. They reproduce with winged swarmers. Swarmers are queen and king ants that fly out to start a new colony of ants.

Ants become the pallbearer
After a few days the dead ant is carried off and placed on the “ant graveyard” by the other dead ants. This may seem like ants have complex feelings and need a few days to grieve before they dispose of the body, but in reality it's far more chemical than that.
Varying amounts of ethyl alcohol affected the behavior of worker ants as they established new colonies by either increasing their death rate or increasing their productivity through the additional calories.
When the ants are crushed, a unique odor becomes detectable; some describe the smell as rotten coconut, others say it smells like ammonia. They are polygenic (multiple queens within one colony), which allows them to grow their colonies at an incredible rate; a single colony can have as many as 10,000 workers.
It would probably not surprise you to learn that some mammals seem to enjoy the intoxicating effects of alcohol. But what about insects? Insects may seem too small in size to become drunk off of alcohol, but you would be wrong. Just about any insect can become intoxicated if you expose it to alcohol.
