the coastguard can help if someone is in trouble in the sea. Or near the sea. If you find it hard to hear or speak you can send a text message to 999 to get help from these people.
Text 'register' to 999 and you'll get a message telling you if it's registered or not. Don't text anything else - there's no need to make a test call. You're now set up.
The Silent Solution is a police system used to filter out large numbers of accidental or hoax 999 calls. It also exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance. You will hear an automated police message, which lasts for 20 seconds and begins with 'you are through to the police'.
When you dial 999, the first person you speak to is the Operator who will ask you which service you need. If you ask for an ambulance, you will be put through to your local ambulance service. An emergency call handler will then take the call and will ask you questions so that help can be arranged.
To access Emergency SOS on an Android phone, quickly press the power button five times. On a Samsung phone, steps may vary slightly. If the method above does not work, open Settings, look for Advanced features, then tap Send SOS messages. From here, you can choose your emergency contacts.
Text-to-911 is the ability to send a text message to reach 911 emergency call takers from your mobile phone or device. However, because voice calls to 911 provide more information to 911 call centers, you should always make a voice call to 911 during an emergency whenever possible.
If you text to 911, dispatchers will ask if they can call you. Location is not as accurate with text as it is with a call. Be sure to text your exact address. A text or data plan is required to use Text-to-911.
Initially, you will be asked four questions: Is the patient is breathing? What address are you calling from? What number are you calling from? (so we can call you back if you get cut off)
If you dial 999, stay on the line. Otherwise we will call you back. The police want to know that you are safe and it saves us valuable time.

Call 999 from a mobile

Deaf people can text emergency services, but only if our phones are registered for the service in advance. Don't wait until you need to call, it will be too late. Do it now.
Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Drag the Emergency Call slider to call the emergency services. If you continue to hold down the side button and volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a countdown will start and an alert will sound.

106 is a text-based Emergency Call Service provided as a part of the National Relay Service (NRS). When you call 106, the operator will connect you with the emergency service organisation (police, fire or ambulance) you request.
As directed by the caller, Telstra transfers the call to the required Emergency Service Organisation (ESO) – Police, Fire or Ambulance services. The emergency response is provided by the requested ESO.
999 and 112: How to Call in an Emergency
To call 999 and 112, simply enter the number into your mobile telephone or landline. The call is free. The operator will answer and ask 'Which service do you require”. If you are unsure, the operator can advise.

Calling 999 is for emergencies only. NHS 111 is for people who need medical help and advice when not in a life-threatening situation. Highly trained advisors, who are supported by healthcare professionals, are available on NHS 111 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
They stated that: 75% of Category A (immediately life-threatening) calls should receive a response within 8 minutes. If a Category A patient requires transport, this should arrive within 19 minutes of the request for transport being made, 95% of the time.
Ambulance services are measured on the time it takes from receiving a 999 call to the vehicle arriving at the patient's location. It should take 8 minutes for the ambulance to arrive if the call is life threatening or an emergency. Ambulance services often send more than one vehicle to try to meet the 8 minute target.
At present, the only way to contact Triple Zero is by voice calling – you cannot send a text or SMS to Triple Zero. 106 is a text-based emergency number for people who are deaf, or who have a hearing or speech impairment.
Hold the power button and one of the volume buttons at the same time. Slide the SOS slider or wait for the counter to reach zero. Turn the phone volume down. You do not want anyone suspicious to know that emergency services have arrived.
