A new study out Tuesday reports that far too often, small amounts of industrial chemicals called phthalates (pronounced THA-lates), which are used to make plastics soft, have been found in samples of food from popular outlets including McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Chipotle.
SAN ANTONIO (NewsNation Now) — A new study published in Nature reveals that phthalates, a chemical used to keep plastics soft, and similar chemicals were found in food purchased from McDonald's, Burger King, Domino's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Chipotle.
McDonald's reported the tonnage of plastic packaging it used in its beverage cups, lids, and utensils in 2018 at 153,000 metric tons, with only 2% recycled content. To reduce plastic use, McDonald's should position the company to shift permanently away from single-use packaging and towards reusable containers.
PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, have been found in food packaging at Mcdonald's and Burger King. Experts say those chemicals are linked to an increased risk of asthma and thyroid disease. McDonald's and Burger King have recently made promises to phase out using those chemicals by 2025.
