Burger King's success in China
Burger King entered during a time where two major food giants, KFC and McDonald's, were competing for control over domestic markets in China.
Wendy's is leaving Japan but hopes to return before long. The company said yesterday that it has decided to not renew its franchise agreement with Zensho Co. Ltd., a large food retailer, after the two couldn't come to terms on an agreement to have Zensho develop more restaurants in Japan.
Wendy's tried to establish itself in Australia in 1982 by opening its first store in Melbourne and eventually had 11 stores.
Chicken specialist Chick-fil-A, which was recently named America's favourite fast food restaurant, is also staying away. Asked whether an Australian expansion was on the cards, chief operating officer Dan Cathy told news.com.au: “Not at this time, but someday we will come to your rescue!”
This was over a disagreement about ice cream suppliers, with the Australian Wendy's corporate office preferring an Australian supplier, and the New Zealand-based locations preferring New Zealand-based suppliers.
Wendy's first tried penetrating this market in 1980, but was forced to pull out in 2009 after losing a price war to competitors, including McDonald's Japan.

Why? They wanted to have brand continuity across the globe, rather than have Australia be the only market where the Burger King brand did not exist. To legally enforce this strategy upon Cowin, Burger King cited poor operational standards as the reason.
KFC opened its first restaurant in Beijing in 1987. As of the end of March 2023, we have grown to over 9,000 KFC restaurants in over 1,800 cities across China.
After setting up here in the 1980s and 1990s, Wendy's finally departed the UK in 2001. Property costs and overheads were cited as the reason for them closing their restaurants, with the brand saying expansion at the time wasn't possible. Time away from the UK market hasn't dented the burger giant's success, however.
