Toothless is a male Night Fury and the current Alpha of the dragons as of the epilogue of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
Is Toothless stronger than the Alpha? The Alphas were able to organize and control other dragons. That is, until Toothless was able to prove the Alphas couldn't control him and that key moment reflected the shift where Toothless proved he was strongerthan the Alpha.
According to the makers of Httyd series, there are only two species capable of being an Alpha- Bewilderbeast and Night Furies. And the title Alpha refers to the King of Dragons.
While Toothless showed how kind and compassionate a Night Fury can be, he also shows that their destructive capabilities, proving that they're the strongest dragons in How to Train Your Dragon.

As a mutant version of a Whispering Death, the Screaming Death is much larger and more powerful.
Official Description. Once thought of as the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself", Toothless (20 in dragon years) has proven to be much more of a giant, winged pussycat than the stuff of nightmares.
Night Furies are also the rarest of all dragons; They have been hunted by the dreaded dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly to near-extinction. Only Toothless remains the last of his kind. However the Hidden World might still have more Night Furies in hiding.
As the last known specimen of the Night Fury species, Toothless is indisputably special. He commands respect from dragons and humans alike.

In the movie, after the fight with Drago's Enslaved Bewilderbeast killed Valka's Bewilderbeast by impaling its underside with his tusks. Despite being supposedly killed, no body was seen in sequences after on the battle field show, possibly meaning he could have survived but was too injured to do anything.
Boomstick: It is also likely that the Bewilderbeast is tougher due to it's size. Both were defeated by Toothless, but the Bewilderbeast's defeat was less humiliating. In fact, the Red Death was actually killed by Toothless. I guess you can say you just witnessed a Red Death today.
The Bewilderbeast is bigger than the Red Death. It has two large tusks on its face. It shoots giant gallons of ice.
