To maximize your face roller's cooling benefits, it's best to store your facial roller in the fridge or freezer in between uses. However, if you want to keep it traditional, Chinese medicine recommends using it at room temperature.
After, you can apply any toner, serums, or moisturizers. To store your roller, keep it chilled in the freezer at all times. If you want the gel inside to be a little softer, take it out of the freezer for a few minutes before you plan to use it or leave it in the refrigerator instead.
Once you've cleaned and dried your facial roller, we recommend storing it in the bag or wrapped in a soft, dry cloth. It's best to store it somewhere it won't easily fall and a spot that is free of excess moisture and heat.
So before you even think about picking up the jade roller, wash your face. If you're going to roll in the morning to decrease any barely-slept-last-night puffiness, consider popping your jade facial roller in the fridge overnight. The cool jade will reduce swelling by shrinking blood vessels.
And because they're made of natural stone, jade rollers stay cool to the touch and can be even more effective if you store them in the refrigerator or freezer, says Sonia Batra, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and cohost of The Doctors.
You shouldn't store your jade roller in the freezer, though. It can get too cold, which can cause the stone to crack. You can put your roller in the freezer for a few minutes to get it cold, but don't leave it in there for too long. To keep your jade roller clean, place it in a bag or in a container in the fridge.
You can use your rose quartz facial roller AM and PM, but for an extra energizing massage, store it in the refrigerator. One of the most desirable features of a rose quartz face roller is the stone's ability to keep a cool temperature, even when applied to warm skin.
After washing, let the tool air dry. If storing the jade roller, rose quartz roller, or Gua Sha in the fridge, keep it in a baggie to avoid contamination. Otherwise, keep in a dry, well-ventilated area.
We recommend jade rolling twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening after washing your face. However, you can use the jade roller as many times as you want, whenever your face needs a moment of soothing calmness.
“Ice rollers stimulate the lymphatic system and massage the face to get rid of puffiness and toxins, stimulate blood flow and reduce muscle tension,” explains Miami dermatologist Annie Gonzalez, MD.
Generally speaking, you can't really overuse a Jade Roller unless you're applying too much pressure and using it excessively throughout the day. If you start to feel pain, or see bruising, then it's a sure sign you're overusing your Jade Roller.
Clean your face roller.
Dr. Khetarpal strongly suggests cleaning your face roller with rubbing alcohol after each use. “Our skin does have bacteria on it,” she says.
Facial rollers are mini rollers that you use on your face that are usually made from jade, rose quartz or another type of crystal. They're crystal healing – for the face. It's best to use them after you've cleansed and before you apply moisturiser.
Like most of your beauty products, we recommend storing your rollers and gua sha somewhere dry. For an added cooling effect, they can also be kept in the fridge. Make sure to pop it in a clean plastic bag, if you're not using a dedicated mini fridge already.
Rose quartz stays cool whereas jade is adaptive in nature and tends to warm with skin contact. Rose quartz is better known for its wrinkle-reducing benefits. Because jade is a soft stone and can encounter wear and tear with repeated use, a rose quartz roller may last you longer (trust us, we did a drop test).
On the face, always roll up and out towards your hairline and outer edge of your face, including your jawline. What is this? On your neck and chest, you can roll downwards and towards your heart. The direction of rolling is important, because you are rolling towards the lymphatic drainage points on your face and body.
Textural irregularities like white streaks are a normal and natural property of a crystal stone. If your crystal roller looks smooth, consistent and flawless in color and texture then it's probably not genuine quartz. Look for embedded white streaks as that's a tell-tale sign your Rose Quartz Roller is genuine.
Store the roller in the refrigerator or freezer for a more cooling, comforting experience. Wipe stones with dry or moist towelette.
They're often touted as an “anti-aging” tool (a phrase some beauty circles, such as Allure magazine, have banned). In reality, explains Suzanne Friedler, a Manhattan-based dermatologist, jade rollers are about as effective as any form of facial massage when done correctly.
You are not required to wash your face after using a jade roller, but it's best practice to wash and cleanse your face before using a jade roller. In addition, make sure to wash and clean your jade roller with warm water and gentle soap after every use to remove any excess skincare products.
The direction you roll in matters—and you should always roll outward from the center of your face. Going back and forth doesn't help improve blood flow to the face, and rolling downward is quite literally dragging your skin down—remember, you want to lift for a more youthful complexion.
Although it might not work to push the products any deeper into your skin, jade rolling a hundred percent feels better when performed after moisturizing. To get the skin properly hydrated beforehand, Chiu suggests first spraying a hydrating mist or applying an alcohol-free toner and gently patting it into the skin.
