Scabies will not go away without treatment 1. First have a warm bath or shower. 2. Then cover the whole body with cream/lotion, from the chin down to the soles of the feet, in between the fingers, under the nails and on the private parts.
With treatment, you won't be itching for long. Your doctor will prescribe a cream or lotion that has medicine in it. Follow directions carefully when you use it. Treatment directions will usually include these steps: • Take a hot, soapy bath or shower, then rinse and dry well.
The scabies mites are tiny and can be difficult to see. Scabies (meaning 'to scratch'), is a condition primarily characterised by intense itching which is usually worse at night or after a hot shower or bath. You may also see silvery lines (burrow markings) under your skin.
After treatment (8 hours for cream, 24 hours for lotion) you can bath or shower as normal. You can return to work or school. You will not give scabies to anyone.
Avoid touching or handling a sick person's clothing or bedding. Scabies mites die when you wash bedding and clothing using hot water and hot dryer cycles or dry-clean the items. Items that cannot be dry-cleaned or laundered can be disinfested by storing them in a closed plastic bag for more than 72 hours.
For the first few days to a week, the rash and itch can worsen during treatment. Within four weeks, your skin should heal. If your skin has not healed within 4 weeks, you may still have mites. Some people need to treat two or three times to get rid of the mites.
If you have a scabies infestation, you should treat all clothing, furniture, and household items you came into contact with over the past few days. Scabies mites can live on your mattress for three days, so sleeping on it before you treat yourself and the mattress could lead to reinfection.
How can I remove scabies mites from my house or carpet? Scabies mites do not survive more than 2-3 days away from human skin. Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning.
Controlling Scabies
Additionally, all bedding, towels, and clothes used in the 3 days before treatment should be properly cleaned. These steps will help to limit re- infestation of treated persons and the spread of infection to others.
However, you do need to wash your bed and pillow sheets in hot water. This should be done the morning after applying the medication at night. You should not shower until you have put the sheets in the wash. You do not need to wash the blankets.
Sweating and hot water increased the intensity of itch in 73 and 67% of scabies patients, respectively.
Permethrin is the drug of choice for the treatment of scabies. Topical permethrin should be administered every 2-3 days for 1-2 weeks to treat crusted scabies. Benzyl benzoate 25% (with or without tea tree oil) Benzyl benzoate may be used as an alternative topical agent to permethrin.
Scabies like warm places, such as skin folds, between the fingers, under fingernails, or around the buttock or breast creases.
Due to the damage caused by Sarcoptes Scabies, your skin can become sensitive which can cause harm if you wash it with hot water. It can also irritate the bugs, making them more aggressive on your skin.
For items which cannot be washed, putting items inside a sealed black plastic bag placed in full sun on a hot day may help to kill scabies mites. If the weather is not very hot this will not be enough to kill scabies mites.
If you wash your hands after applying the medicine, be sure to reapply the medicine to your hands. The day you start treatment, wash your clothes, bedding, towels, and washcloths.
The mites can only live 48 to 72 hours without human contact, so catching scabies from clothes or linen is rare but definitely possible. For the best chance at preventing scabies reinfestation, you should wash all your bedding, couch covers, clothes, and towels, including those in your closet.
Scabies is a common disease and typically described as a skin condition with sparing of face and scalp in adults. However, crusted scabies is not conventional scabies. It can also affect the scalp.

► Clothing/towels/bed linen should be either dry cleaned or machine washed in hot water. ► Non-cleanable items, such as pillows, hats, etc, may be sealed in a plastic bag for 3 to 4 days.
All infested items should be decontaminated by hot washing and drying cycles. Thoroughly clean and vacuum rooms and furniture if the person has crusted scabies. If a member of a household has scabies, all persons living in the household should be treated at the same time to prevent re-infestation.
