As well as eating the right foods after surgery, there are a few you should avoid. Some options increase the chances of constipation, including cheese, red meat, sugary treats, and processed foods. Processed foods also lack the nutrients needed to heal, so are especially detrimental to your health.
In general, surgeries with larger incisions are more likely to require an overnight stay or even an extended stay in the hospital. This would include procedures like open-heart surgery, brain surgery, major abdominal surgery, joint replacements, and lung procedures.
After surgery, try to walk around for a few minutes 2-3 times per day.

During recovery, many people also take pain medications that can cause constipation. Water helps the digestive system work more efficiently, reducing this uncomfortable side effect.
