He is left to wander alone until Bridwell finds him and takes him in and he's eventually adopted by Emily Elizabeth. Later, Emily Elizabeth is forced to send Clifford away to an animal reservation as it is no longer safe for him to live with her.
Clifford's character was created when a Harper & Row editor advised Bridwell to write a story to go along with one of his pictures. Bridwell recalls she picked out his sketch of a baby girl with a horse-sized bloodhound, and casually said, "There might be a story in this" because there always was one.
The dog is red for a practical reason.
When asked how he decided on Clifford's signature color, Bridwell admitted that “it was red because I happened to have red paint on the drawing table that night.” The color may be one reason kids love Clifford: “He's a bright color with a lot of movement.
'Clifford The Big Red Dog' Turns 50 (In Human Years) A big dog has a big birthday this year: Norman Bridwell's beloved Clifford was born in 1962. Bridwell says he was "shocked" when it was accepted for publication.
Q: How old is Emily Elizabeth? A: She's eight. Q:Where does Emily Elizabeth get Clifford? A:From the man down the hall in her apartment building in the city.
Emily-Elizabeth adopted Clifford when he was a very small puppy, when her parents gave him to her on her 6th birthday. Emily-Elizabeth's love apparently caused Clifford to grow enormous, thus starting their new lives on Birdwell Island.

Clifford is a Giant Vizsla. Although Clifford is over 10 feet tall and weighs A LOT (we don't know exactly how much because he broke the scale!), the average Vizsla is only about 2 feet tall and between 45 and 65 pounds.
The original "Clifford the Big Red Dog" was published by Scholastic, Inc., in 1963. It was printed in black, white, and (of course) red. Clifford the Big Red Dog was the manifestation of Bridwell's childhood desire for a dog the size of a horse.
Concept and creation
Clifford is based on and inspired by Norman Bridwell's childhood desire for a dog the size of a horse. In 1962, Bridwell included paintings of Clifford, (who was named 'Tiny' at the time) in a portfolio of children's book illustrations.
Emily soon learns Bridwell did not die, so she and Casey try to save Clifford from being operated on at Lyfegro, once again aided by friends from their neighborhood. They break into Lyfegro's headquarters and rescue Clifford, who then flees through the city with Emily riding on him.
During the celebrations that follow, Red Dog gets up and walks out of the bar, unnoticed by everyone. Upon realizing that the sick dog has left, everyone in the town begins looking for him, eventually finding him lying dead in front of John's grave.
Scooby-Doo is a Great Dane. The character was designed by Iwao Takamoto, an animator at Hanna-Barbera. According to the American Kennel Club, Great Danes are "the mighty 'Apollo of Dogs,'" which is very unlike the silly and cowardly Scooby-Doo.
Description. Doggedly digging up his roots, Clifford visits his city-dwelling mother; his brother who works at a fire station; his sister, a seeing-eye dog; and his second sister, a farm dog. Clifford loves his family and misses them, so Emily Elizabeth takes him to visit his mother and siblings in turn!
As Emily struggles to fit in at home and at school, she discovers a small red puppy who is destined to become her best friend.
Since dogs Clifford's size don't exist, the production team used a bulky, red exoskeleton controlled by two puppeteers. (The dog is too big for just one.) The puppeteers, Rowan Magee and Jon Riddleberger, wore matching red shoes and knee-length shorts to camouflage as they carried the dog's body around New York City.

Tally Ho was his first name, given to him by his first owner and the one who brought him to Dampier.
