At one time, Dooku was the Padawan of Yoda, the Grand Master of the Jedi Order. In 86 BBY, Dooku later completed his Initiate Trials and hoped to be selected as the Padawan apprentice to Lene Kostana due to her mission in hunting down relics associated with the dark side.
Over the next decade, the galaxy was on the verge of civil war with entire star systems—led by Count Dooku, Yoda's one-time Padawan—threatening to secede from the Republic by 22 BBY.
After Obi-Wan Kenobi's capture on Geonosis, Dooku visited the younger Jedi – whose master, Qui-Gon Jinn, had been Dooku's Padawan.
86 BBY: Dooku is chosen as an apprentice for Yoda, and Sifo-Dyas for Lene Kostana. Dooku: Jedi Lost (DJL) establishes Dooku's age as 16. 82 BBY: Dooku's mother Countess Anya dies, and Dooku attends the funeral, still a Padawan, age 20.
Dooku belonged to the aristocracy, and his weapon reflected an older, more chivalric style than the Jedi he faced. It also reflected his status as the head of the Separatists: the lightsaber looked far more ceremonial than practical, suggesting that he himself did not face combat nearly as much as the Jedi did.
The story centers on Jedi Master Mace Windu as he attempts to rescue his former Padawan, Depa Billaba, from his homeworld, Haruun Kal.
Padawan Windu was trained in the ways of the Force by Jedi Master Cyslin Myr.
In his first appearance in the original trilogy, Yoda is described as the mentor of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and lives in exile on the swamp planet of Dagobah. He trains Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force until his death at the age of 900 in Return of the Jedi, though he later returns as a Force spirit.
Even though Kylo Ren uses a red lightsaber, harnesses the dark side of the Force, and wears a cape, he is not a Sith. Because of that, he can never hold the title of Darth. Instead, he was just a chaotic mess of the dark side (until he eventually found his way back to the light).
Eventually, Qui-Gon completed his training, became a Jedi Master, and took on a Padawan of his own: the steadfast Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Qui-Gon Jinn was a Human born on the Republic's capital of Coruscant. As a Padawan in the Jedi Order, he was trained by a Jedi Master Dooku in the ways of the Force. Jinn went on to become a Jedi Master, one who'd developed an independent attitude towards the Jedi Order.
Galen Marek, codenamed Starkiller, was the son of a Jedi fugitive killed by Vader during the Great Jedi Purge. After his father's death, he was trained by Vader since childhood to become the Sith Lord's secret apprentice.
Yoda was a legendary Jedi Master and stronger than most in his connection with the Force. Small in size but wise and powerful, he trained Jedi for over 800 years, playing integral roles in the Clone Wars, the instruction of Luke Skywalker, and unlocking the path to immortality.
Sith apprentices were analogous to Jedi Padawans, and the relationship between Sith Master and apprentice was the analog to Jedi Knight and Padawan.
Darth Plagueis was a legendary Dark Lord of the Sith trained by the Sith Master Darth Tenebrous. At some point during his life, Plagueis acquired the protocol droid 11-4D.
A Sith Lord with the ability to cheat death and create life, Plagueis is the mentor of Sheev Palpatine / Darth Sidious, who, in accordance to the Sith's Rule of Two, eventually betrays Plagueis by murdering him in his sleep, taking his place as Sith Master.
Samuel L. Jackson, who played Windu, told Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that he thought Windu survived the fall. He even said “Star Wars” creator George Lucas confirmed Windu is alive. “George is like, 'I'm OK with that.
A former scavenger from the planet Jakku, her life was changed by the tumultuous events of the last days of the New Republic Era. Her decision to help the droid BB-8 set Rey on a course to discovering the Force that awakened within her, leading her to seek out Jedi Master Luke Skywalker for training.
The Phantom Menace (1999) Introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Mace Windu is depicted as one of the leading members of the Jedi Order, second only to Yoda.
While Dooku was certainly evil -- and even had a Darth sobriquet, Tyranus, that he rarely used -- he was never quite a Sith, at least not in the true sense. Unlike those who espoused the Sith doctrine, Dooku wasn't motivated by hatred or fear, but by the same purpose that drove him as a Jedi.
In his final bout, Dooku lost his Sith lightsaber to the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker once he was defeated in a duel aboard the starship Invisible Hand. Skywalker used Dooku's own weapon to behead the Sith Lord and end his life.
Sidious may have given Dooku the title of Darth Tyranus, but because the Jedi Order knew him as Count Dooku, greatly preferring to not indulge his role as a Sith, they continued to call him by that name.
