A: Most children learn to recognize letters between ages 3 and 4. Typically, children will recognize the letters in their name first. By age 5, most kindergarteners begin to make sound-letter associations, such as knowing that “book” starts with the letter B.
Typically, by the age of three, children should be able to recite the alphabet. However, every child is different. Some toddlers may learn in their twos, and others might not pick it up until the late threes. Children generally learn how to recite the alphabet through repetition.

Most likely your child is having trouble learning letters because you've missed a step in the learning sequence for teaching phonics. Teaching phonics means helping your child learn the code between speech sounds and alphabet letters.
Signs of Giftedness in Children Include:

The average 4-year-old can count up to ten, although he may not get the numbers in the right order every time. One big hang-up in going higher? Those pesky numbers like 11 and 20. The irregularity of their names doesn't make much sense to a preschooler.
At age 5, most kindergartners become able to:

Most 2 year old children are capable of counting to 10 although they may mix up the order of the numbers. Begin practicing numbers and counting with your toddler to help build a strong foundation for number fluency. Daily number practice with colorful flash cards and counting games can make learning fun for your child.
Hyperlexia is advanced and unexpected reading skills and abilities in children way beyond their chronological age. It is a fairly recently named condition (1967) although earlier descriptions of precocious reading do exist.
While the characteristics of young gifted children are diverse, there is some agreement amongst experts: They are often unusually alert and sleep less than others of a similar age. They can be highly curious and soak up new information. They often have excellent memories, and need much less repetition than others.
Most 3-year-olds can count to three and know the names of some of the numbers up to ten. Your child is also starting to recognize numbers from one to nine. He'll be quick to point it out if he receives fewer cookies than his playmate.
Toddler Letter Recognition
If your child is 2 to 3 years old, he or she may sing the alphabet song — but can't yet identify letters. About 20 percent of children can recognize a few letters by age 3, often the letter that starts his or her own first name as well as other letters contained within the name.
But if your child has significant trouble with numbers, letters, or speech, he may have a learning disability. Learning disabilities are a category of disorders that stem from how the brain processes information, making it difficult to grasp some concepts.
Your child's ability to recognize different colors improves around 18 months – the same time they begin to notice similarities and differences in shape, size, and texture. It will be a while longer before they know basic colors, but most children can name at least one by 36 months.
At 4 years, preschoolers know hundreds of words and can use 5-6 words or more in sentences. You can understand what your child is saying all the time. By 5 years, preschoolers can speak more clearly and will know, understand and use even more words, often in more complex sentences of up to 9 words.
Around the ages of four and five, your child is likely to start developing some basic reading skills, such as phonemic awareness, and may even know some sight words. At this stage, your child may also know how to spell his or her name and recognize the letters of the alphabet.
During this stage, children should be able to ride a tricycle, use safety scissors, notice a difference between girls and boys, help to dress and undress themselves, play with other children, recall part of a story, and sing a song.
Most people use terms like “bright,” “gifted,” “exceptional,” “remarkable,” and “talented” interchangeably, but when a psychologist uses the term “gifted,” we're usually talking about something that is statistically quite rare. About 3 to 5 out of every 100 children could be considered gifted.
When do signs of giftedness appear? Signs of giftedness can appear as early as infancy and continue during the toddler and preschool years. Testing for giftedness and high IQ, however, usually takes place around age 5.
