Giving birth can be a frightening, confusing and painful experience for both the dog and the owner.
Animals know when they are dying. They are not afraid of death, at least not in the sense that we people are. Nearing death, they come to a place of acceptance and try to communicate that to us.
Since they may not actually understand death as something permanent, sometimes a dog will wait patiently, believing that the deceased caregiver, will return. The main reason you don't see many dead animals lying around is that most of them don't just drop dead on their own. Unless an animal is at the very top of the food chain, it's likely that it'll meet its end at the hands — or rather, claws — of another animal.
