Prairie Voles In addition to being seriously adorable, prairie voles are also considered the most monogamous animals of all.
It might be a treasured value in many human cultures, but monogamy is rare in the animal kingdom at large. Of the roughly 5,000 species of mammals, only 3 to 5 percent are known to form lifelong pair bonds. This select group includes beavers, otters, wolves, some bats and foxes and a few hoofed animals.
Most penguin species are monogamous (one male breeds with one female during a mating season); however, research has shown that some females may have one to three partners in one season and some males may have one or two partners. Mate selection is up to the female, and it is the females that compete for the males.
Gray Wolves are monogamous, often mating for life. In the pack, only the alpha pair has sexual rights during breeding season. Females are normally sexually mature at 2-years of age. Males are sexually mature at 2- to 3-years of age.
Of the 4,000 or so species of mammals, only a handful of animals have ever been thought to mate for life. This short list of animals includes among others: gibbon apes, wolves, coyotes, barn owls, bald eagles, gorillas and barn swallows.
For males belonging to some species of the Dasyuridae family of marsupials, sex is a fatal, frenzied final act. After intercourse, the immune systems of these palm-sized, mouselike creatures collapse and they die soon afterward.
“As it turns out, lobsters don't mate for life,” explained Mr. Wheir, a video editor in New York. Actually, male lobsters in particular are rather promiscuous. “Lobsters do have a monogamous bond, but it only lasts for two weeks,” said Trevor Corson, the author of “The Secret Life of Lobsters” (HarperCollins, 2004).
Animals that mate for life: beavers
Not much is known about how beavers find their mates, but once they do, they stick with that partner for life. A genetic study by Charles University in Prague even found that beavers stay faithful to their mates. Granted, this only applies to European beavers.
Red foxes are mono-gamous and mate for life. The gestation period is 53 days and the average litter is usually 4-5 cubs. They are born in the whelping den, one of several dens the vixen maintains in her range.
A total of 3 matings is considered to be sufficient by most experts in the field. After the female starts accepting the male, mating every other day for 6 consecutive days will most likely lead to pregnancy. What is this? A female dog will let a male mount her during the fertile part of her heat cycle – the estrus.
Could we mate with other animals today? Probably not. Ethical considerations preclude definitive research on the subject, but it's safe to say that human DNA has become so different from that of other animals that interbreeding would likely be impossible.
The primary function of sex is to reproduce, so it would make sense that nature would incentivise animals to mate by rewarding them with a pleasurable experience. We don't know how many animals experience sexual pleasure, but we have evidence for it in a number of species.
Both sexes are polygamous and breed throughout the year, but females are usually restricted to the one or two adult males of their pride. In captivity lions often breed every year, but in the wild they usually breed no more than once in two years.
So do cats mate for life? While there are famous examples of monogamous animals that mate for life, cats are certainly not one of them. A female cat in heat will actively seek out as many male mates as possible. As a result, it's not uncommon for the same litter of cats to have different feline fathers!
Not a single mammal species has, thus far, been definitively shown to be truly monogamous. (Nevertheless, individual pairs of mammals may be truly monogamous.) Scientists now estimate that only about three to five percent of the approximately 4,000+ mammal species on Earth practice any form of monogamy.
