Do Appetite Suppressants Work? Yes, but probably not as much as you might hope. A review of studies on five major FDA-approved prescription medications for obesity, including orlistat, shows that any of them work better than a placebo for helping people lose at least 5% of their body weight over the course of a year.
The first modern appetite suppressant was amphetamine. Amphetamine (marketed as Benzedrine) became popular for weight control in the 1930s, and the treatment of obesity became one of its many legitimate medical uses.
Tirzepatide: The 'King Kong of Weight Loss Drugs'
The drug, sold under the brand name Mounjaro by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, was originally meant to treat diabetes.
The table below lists prescription drugs approved by the FDA for weight loss. The FDA has approved five of these drugs—orlistat (Xenical, Alli), phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave), liraglutide (Saxenda), and semaglutide (Wegovy)—for long-term use.
These medications are absorbed by the body very quickly, usually within 30 minutes. The effects usually wear off within a few hours.
Fat burners help to boost your energy levels and metabolism so that you can stay more active and train harder, burning more calories. The increase in metabolism helps you burn more calories overall every day. They also suppress your appetite, helping you stay in a calorie deficit more easily.
Most weight loss occurs within the first six months of using the medication. If you don't lose at least 5% of your starting weight after 12 weeks of taking the appetite suppressant, your medication and/or treatment plan may have to be changed.

Lemon water may boost your metabolism
Both the lemon and water components of lemon water can boost your metabolism. When you drink cooler water, your body expends even more energy to heat it, so drinking a cool glass of lemon water regularly throughout the day could increase your metabolism, leading to weight loss.
Aside from diabetes, chronic stress, and sleep deprivation (mentioned above), other health conditions can cause an increased appetite, as well. Hormone conditions, thyroid conditions like hyperthyroidism, genetic conditions, and even growth-hormone secreting tumors can all cause an increased appetite.
Phentermine Results after 1 Week
For someone taking phentermine for weight loss in low doses i.e. 15mg/day, they could lose around 7.8 pounds within the first week. The higher dosage takers with diet plans and regular workouts lost around 18 pounds.
In 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide, under the trade name Wegovy, for treating obesity. And although the agency approved tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro, in 2022 for treatment of only type 2 diabetes, the drug is often prescribed as a weight-loss agent.
Duromine is used to reduce body weight in obese or overweight patients. Duromine is an appetite suppressant that works by directly affecting the area of the brain that controls your appetite making you feel less hungry.
Some people start seeing results from Saxenda in the first two to four weeks. You may lose about 2%—4% of your body weight. However, during clinical trials, people taking Saxenda saw a significant weight loss of at least 5% after eight weeks of treatment.
