When dentures are not properly cleaned or maintained, bacteria can build up causing yeast to form under your dentures. This yeast can cause painful sores to appear. Unlike those still with natural teeth, the bacteria does not build up in the form of plaque.
Salt Water Rinse
A rinse with warm salt water will ease your discomfort and promote healing. Simply combine 1/4 cup (2 ounces) of warm water and 1/4 teaspoon of salt; stir until the salt is dissolved, then swish in your mouth for 30 seconds and spit. This can be used up to four times a day until your sores heal.

It is safe to soak metal-based dentures in effervescent cleansers such as Steradent or Boots Effervescent/Double Action for fifteen minutes. Alternately soak in Dentural or Milton for ten minutes each evening. Soak in water overnight.
Apply aloe vera gel to your dentures one to two times per day to soothe your gums. Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Remove your dentures while you sleep to give your gums a break.

Toothpaste is not intended to be used for denture cleaning and as a result can actually be harmful to your dentures. Opt for a denture cleanser and brush instead.
To help keep your dentures clean and your mouth healthy, it is vital to use an antibacterial mouthwash. Choose an antibacterial mouthwash that contains fluoride to help protect your enamel. It should also include an antibacterial agent to destroy bacteria and help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
