Autism in young children

For children with ADHD, the root causes may include inattention and inability to organize their thoughts, or impulsivity. For autistic children, the reasons are often different — such as not understanding nonverbal communication or delays in language skills.
A girl with Aspergers who does not mimic others appears shy and socially awkward. Her body language is different from her peers, and she seems oblivious to the body language of others. Her voice may lack inflection, and she may show no happiness at the good fortune of others.
ADHD is diagnosed when a patient has symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. For an ASD diagnosis, however, the patient must have clinically significant difficulty with social interaction or communication, and unusually restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior or interests.
Symptoms of High-Functioning Autism
They don't naturally read social cues and might find it difficult to make friends. They can get so stressed by a social situation that they shut down. They don't make much eye contact or small talk.
Sensory hyperreactivity seems to be especially pronounced in autistic females, so much so that many claim sensory issues are the defining feature of their autism.

The special interests of autistic girls and women tend to be more varied and “socially acceptable” than those of their male or amab (assigned male at birth) counterparts. Autistic females are more likely to have special interests involving fine art, literature, pop culture, makeup, and so on.
With autism their play may be repetitive but not raise suspicions if it remains in the realms of gender specific toys and activities. Girls sometimes develop narrow and obsessive interests in collecting insects, stones, leaves or a variety of other random objects or items.
According to the Center for Disease Control, children that are identified on the autism spectrum are one in 44. It is also stated that boys are four times more likely to have an autism diagnosis than girls. The average age of diagnosis in girls is four years old, in comparison to a little over three years old for boys.
Studies have shown that on average, boys are diagnosed with ASD at an earlier age than girls. One study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders found that boys were diagnosed with autism at an average age of 4 years, while girls were diagnosed at an average age of five.
A girl with ADHD may have impulsivity and be hyper-talkative. She may be verbally impulsive, interrupt others, talk excessively, or change topics repeatedly during conversations. She might even blurt out words without thinking about their impact on others. Girls with ADHD can also be overly sensitive.
Social factors make it harder to diagnose autism in girls and they may need to have more behavioral issues or cognitive disability than boys in order to be diagnosed. Girls with autism may score the same on indicators of friendship or empathy as boys, but not the same as typically-developing girls.

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule™ (ADOS™-2) is a standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play, and restricted and repetitive behaviors in children. During an ADOS™-2 assessment, a specialist interacts directly with the child in social and play activities.
Some developmental health professionals refer to PDD-NOS as “subthreshold autism." In other words, it's the diagnosis they use for someone who has some but not all characteristics of autism or who has relatively mild symptoms.
Can ADHD mask autism? Yes. For those who have both conditions, it's more common for the autism diagnosis to come much later compared to those that have only autism. This is likely due to ADHD symptom presentations masking the autistic behaviors.
Signs and symptoms in older children. As children get older, the red flags for autism become more diverse. There are many warning signs and symptoms, but they typically revolve around impaired social skills, speech and language difficulties, non-verbal communication difficulties, and inflexible behavior.
Although the exact cause of autism is still unknown, there is evidence to suggest that genetics play a significant role. Since autism is less prevalent in females, autism was always thought to be passed down from the mother. However, research suggests that autism genes are usually inherited from the father.
