Monoamniotic-monochorionic Twins
This is the rarest type of twin, and it means a riskier pregnancy as the babies can get tangled in their own umbilical cords. If you have monoamniotic-monochorionic twins, your healthcare provider will monitor your pregnancy closely.
Dizygotic twins are the most common type and are known as fraternal twins. Two-thirds of all sets of twins are dizygotic. When two eggs are fertilized during the same pregnancy, the result is a set of dizygotic twins. They are fertilized by two different sperm.
About twins and multiple births
There are two types of twins – identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic). To form identical twins, one fertilised egg (ovum) splits and develops two babies with exactly the same genetic information.
A rainbow baby is a child born after the loss of a previous pregnancy or newborn.
Chimerism occurs when a woman is pregnant with twins and one embryo dies, and the other embryo absorbs the twin's cells. (Scientifically speaking, this type of chimerism is called tetragametic because the baby was derived from four gametes – one egg and one sperm for each embryo.)
Although it may seem to be almost impossible, conceiving with identical triplets, while quite rare, is actually possible. There is no one consistent statistic quoted when it comes to the odds of having identical triplets.
In 99.9% of cases boy/girl twins are non-identical. However, in some extremely rare cases resulting from a genetic mutation, identical twins from an egg and sperm which began as male (XY) can develop into a male / female pair.
The technical name for this is dichorionic. Fraternal twins can be the same or opposite sex and their genes are as different as any other brother and sister. Often, same-sex fraternal twins look different. For example, they might have different hair or eye colour.
You're more likely to have a vaginal birth if the first twin is in a head-down position. But there may be medical reasons why a vaginal birth is not recommended. If you have had a caesarean section before, for example, it's not usually recommended that you have a vaginal birth with twins.
Twins are at increased risk of fetal and infant death compared with singleton births. 1-3 The increased risk is partly the result of the lower birthweight and gestational age at delivery of multiple pregnancies. At particular risk are monozygotic twins who have poorer survival rates than dizygotic twins.
