What to eat the first 24 hours after tooth extraction: It is usually safest to eat only liquids or soft foods for the first 24 hours. This might include items like yogurt, pudding, soup, applesauce, gelatin, and ice cream without any crunchy pieces.
Within the first 24 hours after tooth removal surgery, you should avoid consuming anything that involves chewing. Try to limit yourself to liquids exclusively. If they don't fill you up and you want to consume solid food, go for soft meals that don't need much chewing, like pudding or oatmeal.
Eat Soft Foods And Avoid Crunchy, Hard, And Tough Foods
Eat yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, pudding, and other soft foods after your surgery. After about a week, you can usually start adding more solid foods to your diet. Avoid crunchy, hard, and tough foods for at least 2 weeks.
Drink plenty of clear liquids to remain hydrated and to prevent nausea that may be associated with some pain medications. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water several times a day. Brush your teeth gently around the dry socket area.
Especially following more involved extractions (difficult procedures, the removal of multiple teeth), drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day makes a good idea. Simply drink the beverage. Rinsing or similarly disrupting your extraction site with liquids during the first 24 hours should be avoided.
Dairy contains proteins that can encourage the growth of bacteria and increase the risk of infection. This is because dairy provides an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, which can lead to swelling and discomfort in the gums and surrounding area.
Bread is typically tough to chew after wisdom tooth removal and you are generally recommended to avoid any foods that could get stuck to your surgery site. Crackers and breads are notorious for getting stuck on teeth and stuck in the mouth and that can only cause trouble post oral surgery.
While every patient heals at a slightly different pace, most people can begin drinking small amounts of coffee around 5 days after an extraction. If all goes well, within two weeks any swelling should subside and your mouth should be mostly healed. At that point, you can return to drinking your normal amount of coffee.
Eating Rice After Tooth Extraction
Best-cooked rice is soft, does not require hard chewing, and is easily digestible. Therefore, it is a suitable choice for your diet after tooth extraction.
Yogurt. Yogurt is a great snack to eat after your wisdom teeth are removed. For one thing, it's completely soft, so you won't have to chew at all. For another, it's a good source of protein and other nutrients that you'll need to help recover after surgery.
The Answer. In general, we recommend that you do not drink coffee for at least a few days after a tooth extraction. The main reason we advise against it is due to the risk coffee poses on the overall healing process.
Your dentist will suggest avoiding alcohol for at least 7 to 10 days after your extraction to allow your tissue to heal. Instead, they will recommend drinking plenty of water. You'll stay hydrated to aid the healing process.
Caffeine causes your blood vessels to dilate, leading to increased blood flow and blood pressure. This can increase the risk of bleeding, which may dissolve or dislodge the blood clot at your extraction site.
We typically recommend that patients avoid hard or crunchy foods like nuts, chips, toast, cereal or anything else that could possibly be abrasive. It is also important to avoid anything that requires you to bite down aggressively or to chew for too long.
One of the healthiest meals you can eat, usually for breakfast, porridge is a great option. It's easy to make, soft enough to eat, flavourful if you add some jam, sugar or syrup and it's very nutritious. Just make sure you cook it until it's really soft for the easiest consumption.
Bananas. Many oral surgery specialists recommend eating bananas after the surgery. The soft texture is easy to chew and doesn't irritate your gums. Bananas are loaded with minerals and vitamins, including folate, manganese, vitamin B6, and potassium, which are good for your oral health.
Ice Cream: After having a minor surgery, it's okay to treat yourself with a little sweet. The coolness will not only feel good, but it will also help sooth inflamed tissue. Try to avoid eating cones and flavors of ice cream with large chunks in them like chocolate chips and nuts.
Gatorade, Juice (non-acidic), and Milk are also good options. Immediately following surgery we recommend cool soft foods: Ice-cream, Jello, Pudding, Applesauce, Yogurt, Protein shakes or Milkshakes (no straws!).
Always sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights after the wisdom tooth extraction surgery. If you struggle to put yourself in that position, get support from a few pillows. Keeping your head elevated at a 45-deg angle while sleeping ensures faster recovery. It also minimizes swelling in the surgical area.
It is best to stick to soft foods requiring minimal chewing, such as applesauce, yogurt and pudding. Vitamin C and vitamin A help to support the healing process following a tooth extraction. Therefore, it is a good idea to eat foods rich in these nutrients.
You can simply drink normal water after one or two hours but if you are looking to drink any soda, acidic drink or an alcohol, you must wait for at least a week after tooth extraction.
Drinks such as warm tea are fine, but drink them straight back and do not swill them around the socket area. Do not consume alcoholic drinks or smoke for the next 24 hours.
