Lightening the yellow and muting it that much more than the white, light grey will also be effective. Grey will remove the brightness and make the yellow less vibrant without making it brown. All yellow hues will be lightened and muted by the use of grey, no matter what temperature they are.
Sherwin-Williams' Charcoal Blue has gray undertones that can cool off yellow undertones in surfaces like oak floors.
Blue will likely bring the yellow out more. One of the best ways to neutralize it would be to use that color for your walls as well. Or stick with warmer colors like sage green. Try to avoid putting purer whites next to it as well.
The simplest way of getting a lighter yellow is to mix white with yellow. However, this can result in losing the brightness of the yellow – even though it will make it lighter. You can see the result of what white mixed with yellow looks like in the color chart below.
The easiest and safest method to make whites white again is to use a solution of oxygen-based bleach and warm water. It can be used safely on almost all types of fabric. You can also make whites white again by using the ultraviolet rays of the sun or using laundry bluing, baking soda, vinegar, or chlorine bleach.
PURPLE/VIOLET PRODUCTS
Purple is the exact opposite colour to yellow on the colour wheel, so when mixed together they essentially cancel eachother out. Purple/Violet Shampoos are super popular with blondes, and for good reason.
Purple cancels out yellow. Blue cancels out orange. Green cancels out red.
A bright yellow might be too stimulating for a room like a bedroom, while pale yellow can be cheery but relaxing. Try different pairings: Colors complementary with yellow or opposite yellow on the color wheel are blue and purple, but you can also pair them with orange, red, white, pink, green, and brown.
By convention, the three primary colors in additive mixing are red, green, and blue. In the absence of light of any color, the result is black. If all three primary colors of light are mixed in equal proportions, the result is neutral (gray or white). When the red and green lights mix, the result is yellow.

For a tranquil look, your light yellow paint should be paired with equally light colors. Think purple or lavender, light blue, or light gray. These colors work as accents to yellow walls, or as the main wall color with light yellow accent pieces on furniture or textiles.
We mentioned earlier that beige is a mainstay. But if you want a cooler shade to counterbalance yellow, cool beige is a great choice. Cool beige furniture is also especially easy to find. You can easily create a well-balanced living room with cool beige couches and some yellow accent pillows.
Pure pigments absorb a single frequency or color of light. The color of light absorbed by a pigment is merely the complementary color of that pigment. Thus, pure blue pigments absorb yellow light (which can be thought of as a combination of red and green light).
Similarly, a yellow pigment absorbs blue and violet light while reflecting yellow, green, and red light (the green and red additively combining to produce more yellow). Blue pigment absorbs primarily yellow, orange, and red light.
So combining blue with yellow light is like combining blue light with red and green light. The result of combining these three primary colors of light is to produce white light.
Yellow paint reflects most light at long wavelengths and absorbs light at short wavelengths. Because blue paint and yellow paint both reflect middle (green appearing) wavelengths when blue and yellow paint are mixed together, the mixture appears green.
Yellow's official complementary colors are blue and purple, but yellow can work well with a range of other shades, including orange, red, white, pink, green, and brown.
As yellow is a lighter color, the darker muted blue and red colors with a muddy color will overpower yellow. That is why we see an overall brown color. You can lighten it up with a little white.
Add red/ green or brown a little bit to create a darker shade of yellow. If you want to create dark yellow using just two colours then add a bit of orange to yellow and get a darker shade of yellow.
Borax Powder
A naturally occurring mineral, borax is a chlorine bleach alternative that helps remove stains and cuts through dulling residue. Mix one-half cup of powdered borax per one gallon of warm water. Add the yellowed white clothes and soak for at least 30 minutes or longer. Wash as usual.
Our number one choice to avoid the Yellow is to use High Lifts wherever possible. They have delicious Tones - Ash, Beige, Silver - that will counteract the Yellow. And they don't cause the damage you get with Bleach. Plus, you Lighten and Tone your Hair at the same time, bonus!
Purple is used because, if you take a look at the color wheel, it is the direct opposite color of yellow. This means purple and yellow cancels one another out. So when using purple pigment on brassy, yellow tones it color corrects your hair's hue restoring it to its former bright, cooler color.
The classic color combination of white and yellow is always a favorite. Both colors give a clean, fresh vibe, and it's totally possible to style this combination in a way that doesn't look boring and washed out.
