Ideally, you'll want to use a shade that's most similar to the color of your natural roots (before they turned gray). And if you're still stumped, a dark taupe is usually a safe bet.
Stick to light, neutral colors like white, beige, light browns, or grey when applying eyeshadow. These colors will work to bring your eyes forward. When you have grey hair, using silver and grey eyeshadow can help tie your whole look together. Try pairing that with brown or black for a flattering smokey eyeshadow look.
“The best eye shadow shades for gray hair are taupe, navy, brown, and plums,” says celebrity makeup artist, Nydia Figueroa. And if you're looking to add brightness, choose one with “a bone matte color or even a color that is a little brighter than your skin tone to pull the look together,” Figueroa explains.
While neutral colors may have worked well for you in the past, Brown advises that with gray hair, nude tones will leave you looking washed out. "You need pops of color, there's no question," she said. Instead, she encourages hues that fall within the rosy pink family.
You want to avoid shades that are too similar to your natural coloring; beiges, creams, off-whites, stone grays, taupes, etc. These colors will only wash you out and emphasize your gray tones.
For the lips, pink, rose, and coral shades are perfect complements to gray hair. Just be sure to choose the shade that best suits your skin tone.
Blush. Rosy pink or plummy toned blusher is best. Avoid anything orange or bronze as this will look harsh and unflattering.
Also, navy blue and teal blue make good compliments for gray or silver hair as well as deep purple. Lilac or lavender is a great color to complement gray hair because it is so light and will look beautiful with the silver shades. Also, tartan red is beautiful with gray hair as well as rust shades.
"Even if the hair on your head is silver or gray hair, I suggest dyeing brows light brown," says Petrescu.
Sunkissed, golden, honey, caramel and champagne colours are often excellent, and browns stay warm and golden feeling, never too dark. Strawberry blonde and red can also work well. Greys stay warm, more like a pale gold than anything remotely blue.
Purple and Blue Shampoo
Celebrity hairstylist Peter Butler says violet- and purple-based shampoos, such as Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet Shampoo and L'Oréal EverPure Sulfate Free Brass Toning Purple Shampoo, are super helpful in keeping gray, silver, white, and blonde hair bright and manageable.
You'll find that the best skin tones for those with gray hair are cool and light, such as pale beige or washed tan. If you have a darker complexion, it's important to avoid colors that may appear too harsh against your grey locks. Instead, opt for lighter shades such as pastels and soft neutrals.
The best glasses for your hair colour will come in strong colours, such as cherry red, sea blue or a black. These colours will give you a bold contrasting colour while also complementing the overall tone of your grey or white hair. Stay away from yellow and brown frames as they will have a dulling effect.
If you are a natural brunette, you'll want to blend your greys with darker lowlights. For natural blondes, you should add highlights and lowlights ranging from pearl to medium blonde. And if you are a natural redhead, a range of brown and blonde highlights and lowlights will enhance your grey locks best.
When you've gone gray, or white, or salt-and-pepper, your skin can look washed-out and dull. So use a luminizing, moisturizing foundation, and apply powder only where you absolutely need it, says New York City makeup artist Mally Roncal. It makes every complexion more vibrant, says Roncal.
For a more minimalistic yet super chic makeup aesthetic, try using pink tones that will complement your white hair. Baby pink and pastel shades are especially beautiful on fair to medium complexions; whereas, fuchsia has the wow factor against deeper skin tones.
Best makeup colors for gray hair: The right blush
For blush, you would want to go with a shade that is slightly deeper than your natural skin tone. A warm pink or peach color will look great, as it will add a subtle flush of color to your cheeks and some glow to your skin.
First of all, consider your skin tone. Silver grey hair will look best on olive and fair skin with yellow undertones. If you have a pink tone, your skin may appear red and irritated with a cool grey hue. So for you, it's better to go for a peachy colour such as Metallic Rose Gold.
Silver Fox. Silver, ashy, blond, and platinum are indeed the most popular hair color choices for women over 60.
Typically, white people start going gray in their mid-30s, Asians in their late 30s, and Blacks in their mid-40s. Half of all people have a significant amount of gray hair by the time they turn 50.
To get silver hair, you have to bleach your hair until your strands are almost white. The darker your natural color is, the more bleach sessions you'll have to go through to lighten your hair enough to achieve that ethereal silver hue. The bleaching process can be very damaging to your delicate mane.
Silver hair turns blonde after washing due to the fact that silver pigmentation similar to the pigments found in the pastel dyes for hair, are surprisingly weak. Therefore the silver hair tends to fade to blonde, regardless of whether you apply permanent or semi-permanent silver hair colour.
