"Even if the hair on your head is silver or gray hair, I suggest dyeing brows light brown," says Petrescu. "It creates a frame for your eyes that sharpens your features for a more youthful look."
A brow tint is the best solution as it lasts for six weeks and evens out the colour. If you can't get to a salon, brow products really help. A good gel with a tint is the best to cover sneaky greys. The BBBLondon Tinted Brow Gel is my favourite and also slicks your brows into place without being too stiff.
YOUR BROWS SHOULD BE DARKER
We hate to break it to you, but if you thought that your brows should perfectly match your hair, you might want to think again. In fact, your eyebrows should actually be darker than your hair color—unless your tresses are pitch black. This is what looks the most natural.
Dark brows were shown to make a person look younger in a study that was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology because humans appear to (subconsciously) correlate distinct contrasts in facial features with youth.
“Darker eyebrows are ideal for looking younger, as they provide a greater contrast to the surrounding skin on the face. Make sure you don't overdo it though, as thick, overdrawn brows can portray a harsh look, giving the opposite of a youthful effect.
Shades like gold, brown, and red can complement greying hair and give a vibrant pop of colour to your face. Another option is to choose glasses with transparent frames or pastel frames, which have a softer, more delicate look.
Typically, white people start going gray in their mid-30s, Asians in their late 30s, and Blacks in their mid-40s. Half of all people have a significant amount of gray hair by the time they turn 50.
Choose a pencil that is the color of your highlight if your hair has a hint of red, and choose a pencil that is the color of your base if your hair is a cool, ash brown. For a softer brunette hue, we recommend Anastasia's best-selling brow pencil in Soft Brown.
These pencils are perfect for those with gray, silver, or salt and pepper hair. Embrace your natural coloring with these light gray and medium gray eyebrow pencils!
"Softer, fuller brows tend to look younger and give the face a more relaxed vibe. Thinner brows can throw off the facial balance and look pinched," he explains.
With the above in mind when considering whether your eyebrows should be lighter or darker, I'd suggest the main rule of thumb is… “…to have your brows similar to your hair colour! You can't go wrong! If you wish to go for a slightly different colour, I'd recommend only 1-2 shades darker or lighter!”
When it comes to filling in your eyebrows, using a shade that's too dark—even just slightly—can really come off as unnatural. Instead, use a shade slightly lighter than your natural eyebrows. Trust us, it will look much more natural and help keep your brows from appearing drawn on—even if they are.
Neutrals and Pinks
Neutral and pink colored eye shadows also make you look younger. Neutrals will also complement your everyday look without making you feel that you have over done your makeup, whether you are in the office or college.
Opt for a lighter eyeshadow rather than a dark, smoky shade on your eyelids and around the eyes, like Jenna Dewan Tatum. "Highlighting the corners makes eyes look brighter and fresh," says Ahnert. "Use a light color shadow in matte or shimmer to inner corner, lower lash line in outer corner, and the inner lid."
The end of your brows should be darker than the front to balance out the face. The light hits the centre of your face, so unnaturally dark brows always look odd. Not only that, dark brows towards the front give the illusion of an impending frown, weighing down the centre of your face.
Instead, go for a dark brown that would work best when filling in your brows. But if your skin tone is rather deep, make sure you first use a dark brown and then go over to fill them in with a black very subtly.
If you're drastically changing your hair colour, you can tint your brows. Speak to your hairdresser to mix a custom colour. Don't try this at home!
If you have light brown hair with light eyes, pick a darker tone to define. If you have dark eyes, it's always safer to go slightly lighter. You should match to your highlight rather than your base," says Madron.
