Türkiye hosts the largest number of refugees, with 3.6 million people, followed by the Islamic Republic of Iran with 3.4 million people. Colombia is third with 2.5 million, including other people in need of international protection.
Countries of origin and destination of refugees
Of the countless refugees in 2022, most came from Venezuela and from Afghanistan. On the other side are the United States of America and Germany as most often chosen host countries for an application for asylum.
The top 10 nationalities of those who seek asylum by plane are quite different from those who come by boat, with many more from our surrounding Asia-Pacific neighbours. In the past five years, the main nationalities seeking asylum by plane include those from China, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Vietnam.
By this measure, Australia recognised or resettled 23,002 refugees in 2018 (1.39% of the global total), being ranked 14th overall, 20th per capita and 60th relative to national GDP.
So why does Australia have tough asylum policies? Australia's two leading political parties, the ruling Liberal-National coalition and the Labor opposition, both support tough asylum policies. They say the journey the asylum seekers make is dangerous and controlled by criminal gangs, and they have a duty to stop it.
Do refugees get free housing? No, refugees are not automatically provided with free housing because of their refugee status. ⁶ But refugees, just like all other Australian residents, can apply for housing supports if they are struggling and meet the eligibility criteria.
Unlike people who arrive in Australia by boat, people who arrive by plane are generally not subject to mandatory detention. Does Australia have more asylum claims than other countries? No.
In fact, it is a basic human right. All people are entitled to protection of their human rights, including the right to seek asylum, regardless of how or where they arrive in Australia, or in any other country.
There are a “record” 100,000 people who have sought asylum onshore who remain in Australia including 72,875 whose claims were refused who are yet to be deported.

Does Australia accept all refugees referred to it by the UN refugee agency? No. Though the UNHCR recommends or refers people for resettlement, the ultimate decision to grant a visa rests with Australia's Immigration Department.

Our isolation means that it is much easier to control who comes into our country. This makes it much harder for refugees to seek asylum in Australia, but also means that refugees coming by boat can be seen as a threat by ordinary Australians. This sense of threat and fear has been stoked by politicians on both sides.
Besides those who fall in the 'legacy caseload', when a claim is rejected, a person may appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), and, failing that, they may seek judicial review. Once the appeals process has been exhausted, the person is required to leave Australia.
