Although it is not mentioned in either the film or the book, J.K. Rowling confirmed later on that, as a Dementor forces its victims to relive the worst moments of their lives, Dudley's experience causes him to see exactly who he is: cruel and rotten.
The aftermath of this saw Dudley change to an extent; he became less belligerent and even civil to Harry. The Dementor attack was the catalyst for a change in Dudley's personality that started in Order of the Phoenix, and we saw the end result in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Dudley was not the intended target. He was a kind of collateral damage who was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Dudley couldn't see the dementors, he just felt their presence. He felt cold and despair imparted by the dementors.
Dudley blamed Harry for his state after the attack of dementors because : Harry was pointing his wand at him when the attack happened. Dudley thought that it was Harry's doing to scare him or maybe even harm him. One of the dementors was trying to kiss Dudley making him remember his worst nightmares.
Dudley's last line is also found in a deleted scene.
His last words in the movie are, "I still don't understand why we have to leave." But he also has a deleted film scene where he has a final conversation with Harry, and his last line is, "I don't think you're a waste of space."
Dear Petunia, It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the death of your sister and her husband. They were murdered by a Dark wizard known as Lord Voldemort, whose cruelty and violence they had been fighting for years. I tried my best to protect them, but, alas, I regret to say that I failed.

'Remember my last'
Petunia's disdain for Harry was most likely born from a long-standing jealousy of her magical sister, Lily. A Howler from Dumbledore, addressed to Petunia, said 'Remember my last' – no doubt referring to the letter which he left with baby Harry, on the doorstep of Privet Drive.
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
Harry Potter: Stag
Harry's patronus is undoubtedly the most recognizable. The stag is first seen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when it saves Harry and Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) from the dementors at the lake.
Behind the scenes. A Dementor attempting a kiss on Sirius is witnessed in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in which his soul is being sucked out his mouth in the form of a small, glowing, white dot, but the Dementors are fought off by Harry's Patronus before they can finish this.
Incidentally, can Squibs see Dementors? ' he added, looking left and right along the bench. 'Yes, we can! ' said Mrs Figg indignantly.
Vernon's dislike of Harry, she adds, “stems in part, like Severus Snape's, from Harry's close resemblance to the father they both so disliked”.
He defended Harry because he feared the emotional repercussions that he would impose upon himself if he didn't; the Dursleys defended him because they feared retribution.
One of the most beautiful moments in the entire Potter series came from when Dudley and Harry were able to make amends. This occurred in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when Dudley told Harry that he didn't think he was a waste of space. They even shook hands!
From sisters to strangers
No doubt Petunia would have been saddened by the news of Lily's death but those complicated emotions – grief, regret and unresolved jealousy – were probably buried in the distractions of housework, gossip and pandering to her son Dudley's every whim.
The fan asked the author if Aunt Petunia was a Squib (a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent) and Rowling replied: "Good question. No, she is not, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle.
She made a promise to Dumbledore
One of Petunia Dursley's biggest secrets was the promise she made to Albus Dumbledore. When James and Lily were killed at the hand of Voldemort and Harry was dropped off on the doorstep of 4 Privet Drive, there was a letter accompanying him.
Under Kingsley Shacklebolt, Azkaban was purged of Dementors. While it remains in use as a prison, the guards are now Aurors, who are regularly rotated from the mainland. There has been no breakout since this new system was introduced.
Dudley Garner (40) sank into a deep and desperate depression after sustaining a defused axonal brain injury in 2009.
Dudley was left confused, and he initially blamed Harry for the event until he confronted what he truly witnessed during the attack. Though he primarily felt the attack, Dudley was also forced to see a version of himself that he didn't like.
Albus Dumbledore also told Dobby that he was free to call him a "barmy old codger" if he liked.
The first one is the fact their initial meeting and resulting relationship was very bad: He jumps out the bushes and calls her younger sister a witch before she recognizes him and judges his appearance. He calls her a muggle dismissively which she also takes as an insult.
The idea being that Dumbledore is wise enough to know he cannot have his family back and has reconciled that, so the mirror instead shows him with warm socks.
