At the age of six, Ariana was attacked by Muggle boys who saw her practicing magic, and, when she couldn't show them the trick, attacked her in an attempt to stop her from using the magic. This left her traumatised to the point of rendering her magical abilities unstable and uncontrollable.
They forced their way through the hedge, and when she couldn't show them the trick, they got a bit carried away trying to stop the little freak doing it. ' The brutal attack on young Ariana left her scarred and damaged, mentally unstable and afraid to perform magic.
What exactly happened that night in Godric's Hollow is more of a mystery than ever. We might never know the entire story of what happened when the Dumbledore brothers dueled with Grindelwald, but it does seem like that fateful blood pact haunted Dumbledore his entire life because it led to his sister Ariana's death.
Like Ezra Miller's character Credence, Ariana was an Obscurial, the host of an Obscurus, an unstable force that arises when a young witch or wizard suppresses their magic.
Ariana wasn't a squib though, she sounds more like an Obscurial - the same as Credence. At 14-years-old, Ariana flew into a rage and her magical outburst killed Kendra. "Then, when she was fourteen ... see, I wasn't there," said Aberforth. "If I'd been there, I could have calmed her down.

During the first books of the series, Neville is portrayed as an incompetent wizard and as poorly skilled at school (with the only exception of Herbology). The character himself reveals in the second book that it was even feared by his family, especially his grandmother, that he was a Squib during his childhood.
Many Harry Potter fans might also wonder how Tom Riddle avoided becoming an Obscurial, and the answer is that he was also protected by muggle ignorance. Tom was highly aware that he was magical, but he enjoyed the power he emanated, and he used it as a way of scaring people away from him.
Present day. By 1926, Credence had been losing control of his Obscurus, which was running amok in New York. During that time, Credence had gotten into contact with Gellert Grindelwald, who had been masquerading as Percival Graves, the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (MACUSA).
It's likely Nagini will find Credence in Fantastic Beasts 4, and she will try to find a cure for his Obscurus curse - as a Maledictus, she knows the tragedy of a lifelong curse and will only be more determined to help her friend.

Aurelius was an illegitimate child of Aberforth's. His mother is killed, and as a result Aberforth is unable to care for his son. Credence is taken to America and put up for adoption, a fact known to no one but Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz).
Dumbledore didn't sacrifice his sister. There was a duel between him, his brother and Grindelwald. They fought and Ariana accidentally got killed. No one had ever found out which one of those three had actually killed Ariana.
Dumbledore explained that he decided to leave Harry with Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley because of the blood wards. IMHO, I think he could have gone with some other way to keep Potter safe. I talk more about this here and here.
He's not. He's Corvus Lestrange, the son of Corvus Lestrange Snr and his second wife, Clarisse Lestrange née Tremblay. He has an older half-sister, Leta, from his father's first marriage with Laurena Kama. At some point, Credence was separated from his birth family at a young age.
He ended up in America after being switched with Corvus Lestrange by the latter's sister, Leta Lestrange. Due to his step-mother's cruelty and hated towards magic and being emotionally unstable, Credence became the Obscurial whose Obscurus wreaked havoc in New York City.
Personality. In the sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, she desperately wants to be with her no-Maj lover, Jacob but is unable to because of Rappaport's Law, a law that prohibits witches and wizards associating themselves with No-Majs.
