Whether it was Palpatine, or Darth Vader, or
Jedi and Sith alike fear the loss of power, but the Sith choose to harness that fear as a source of strength.
Like his master, Darth Sidious, better known as Sheev Palpatine, Maul's main weakness was his overconfidence. In Luke Skywalker's confrontation with Palpatine during The Return of the Jedi, he tells the Emperor that his overconfidence is his weakness.
The Sith famously hate the Jedi, but it's also clear the Dark Side worshipers fear their Light Side counterparts.
As powerful as Darth Sidious may have been, it's easy to forget he actually seemed afraid of Master Yoda. As seen in Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine initially thought he could deal with the aged Jedi Master - and then, when Yoda proved able to counter the Sith Lord's Force lightning, he fled.
Palpatine admits to Darth Vader that the Jedi he actually feared most was none other than Jocasta Nu.
Even after his brutal scorching in the fires of Mustafar, sand remained the only natural phenomenon that Vader feared. To him, sand was a reminder that he'd failed to save his mother or Padme from death.
1 Darth Sidious
As well as being a gifted bladesman Sidious' connection to the Dark Side is extremely powerful, granting Sidious the ability to conduct force lightning. Likewise, Sidious took on both Darth Maul and Darth Vader as his apprentice, two of the most powerful Sith and best villains in all of Star Wars.
Darth Sidious, also known as the Emperor and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, is not just the evilest Sith in Star Wars (arguably in both canon and Legends) but the evilest villain overall, deemed so thanks to his irredeemable actions throughout the Skywalker saga and surrounding content.
There's no explicit canonical reason for his depleted strength, but the miniseries itself offers some strong clues. It likely comes down to being out of practice.
A Sith Lord with the ability to cheat death and create life, Plagueis is the mentor of Sheev Palpatine / Darth Sidious, who, in accordance to the Sith's Rule of Two, eventually betrays Plagueis by murdering him in his sleep, taking his place as Sith Master.
But there were also Force users on the dark side who changed their ways as well. Many Sith throughout Star Wars canon and legends were redeemed and turned to the light.
Darth Vectivus was one such Sith Lord. Vectivus was a businessman involved in mining operations, who just so happened to abide by a code of ethics. Though he was ruthless in business and had a vast wealth of Sith power, he maintained a level of balance and decency in his life.
Both the Jedi and the Sith do not “love”, in the romantic sense of the word. The Jedi fear the selfish side of romantic love and the Sith fear the selfless side of romantic love.
The Sith Never Actually Wanted Peace
Shockingly, however, the version of the dark side that Sidious pitched was far from what the Sith Code actually is. The actual Sith Code is: “Peace is a lie.
As the first Dark Lord of the Sith, Ajunta Pall founded the first Sith Empire and expanded it onto other worlds. The Sith took over the planet Ziost and created it as their capital and as Pall's new home.

Even though Kylo Ren uses a red lightsaber, harnesses the dark side of the Force, and wears a cape, he is not a Sith. Because of that, he can never hold the title of Darth. Instead, he was just a chaotic mess of the dark side (until he eventually found his way back to the light).
