A large group of seals during breeding is called a harem. Adult males are called bulls and females are called cows, while a young seal is a pup.
Seals eat fish, birds, and shellfish. Male seals are called bulls; females are called cows; and babies are called pups. Seals have a thick layer of fat called blubber under their skin to keep them warm in icy water.
Other than DNA testing, the only way to confirm whether a seal is female or male is by looking at its belly.

Adult males: 2.4 – 3.5m. Females: Lighter in colour, predominantly creamy grey with darker pigmentation around their flippers. Males: Black to Brown colour. Pups: Dark brown and paler around the head.

In this study, we report the finding of a hybrid adult female between a South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) and a South American sea lion (Otaria byronia), and its offspring, a male pup, in Uruguay.
Are seals friendly to humans in their natural habitats? Probably not, but even if they seem to be – keep your distance. In the wild, human contact with seals does more harm than good. As seals are still considered wild animals, they can be stressed from human attention and feel uncomfortable or threatened.
Lifespan & Reproduction
Gray seals live for 25 to 35 years. They gather in large groups to mate. Males that breed on land can mate with many different females in a single breeding season. Females are pregnant for about 11 months and give birth to a single pup.
Hooyah is the battle cry used in the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard to build morale and signify verbal acknowledgment. It originated with special forces communities, especially the Navy SEALs, and was subsequently adopted by other Navy divisions.
There are many collective nouns for seals, including a colony, a rookery, a herd, a harem but perhaps our favourite is a bob of seals.
Seals. Wild seals are very intelligent, curious and have good coordination, learning tricks easily in captivity.
Harbor seal males are somewhat more monogamous than some pinnipeds, mating with one to several females per year. Harbor seals usually return to the same breeding grounds every year.
“Alpha” males sing out to warn low-ranking seals to stay away or fight. With ringside seats, Mathevon, Casey and their team observed these animals for five years and became accustomed to recognizing individual animals by the rhythms of their voices.
Adult males may grow to 14-16 feet (4-5 m) in length and weigh up to 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg). The females are much smaller at 9-12 feet (2.5-4 m) in length and 900-1,800 pounds (400-800 kg).
Predators. The most common predator of harbor seals is the killer whale. Other predators include sharks, sea lions, land predators such as wolves, bears and coyotes, and bald eagles may take newborn pups. Since implementation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972, hunting has been restricted to Alaska Natives.
Caniformia is a suborder within the order Carnivora consisting of "dog-like" carnivorans. They include dogs (wolves, foxes, etc.), bears, raccoons, and mustelids. The Pinnipedia (seals, walruses and sea lions) are also assigned to this group.
Once a sea lion becomes sexually mature, at around age four or five, they are able to breed. Female sea lions are called cows, while males are called bulls. Those who live in Baja, California and southern California establish breeding territories from May through July.
