Catholic convention is that discarding objects such as statues, rosaries or the palms from Palm Sunday should be by means of respectful burning or burial.
A broken rosary or religious statue normally would be buried. In all, the underlying idea is that what has been dedicated to God should be returned to God, in a sense, the same way a person's dead body is committed to the earth. Never should one just “throw out” what has been dedicated to God.
What happens when the rosary or statue breaks and is irreparable? Or, when the palm dries out, and the following Palm Sunday provides us with new palm? The basic rule for the disposition of these items is to burn or to bury them.
Treating items with respect
Regardless of someone's religious tradition, the bottom line when making decisions about unwanted or damaged religious items is to treat them with reverence and respect. In almost all cases, burial is the preferred method of disposal for damaged items.
Some religious sects that use the rosary will tell you that a rosary is not meant to be worn, or that it must be worn a particular way. Some might say a broken rosary should be discarded rather than repaired. In truth, the rosary should serve you as you think is best; there isn't necessarily a wrong way to use it.
You might think rosaries are pretty or cool, but before you decide to add them to your wardrobe rotation, remember they are complicated religious objects. They're an instrument of prayer, but also a devotional object. They're a symbol of marginalized cultural identity, but also of an institution of colonization.
Any linen, vestment, or altar cloth should be burned and the ashes buried. Excess or contaminated Holy Water should be poured directly into the ground. Palms should be burned, and the ashes used for Ash Wednesday with the excess buried.

To determine if a rosary is antique, you can check its beads. Rosaries with beads made from seeds, wood, bone, Irish horn, coral, amber, mother of pearl, precious metal filigrees and glass are usually considered antique.
If you strive to pray the Rosary daily and devoutly, one of two things will happen: either you will sin less and less, becoming more like Christ—or you will give up on the Rosary. In this way, devotion to the Rosary is a direct battle between grace and sin within us. If we persevere in the Rosary, Mary will prevail.

Some of the items that are permitted include things like: Soft toys such as stuffed animals. Letters – These could be old letters you had saved, or you could write a new letter to your loved one. Wooden items such as rosary beads.
