The hymen can usually be readily visualized by placing the child in the frog-leg position (Figure 2), then gently grasping the labia majora and providing gentle separation or traction.
Signs of a broken hymen might be light spotting or bleeding, discomfort or visible skin around your vaginal opening. In most cases, your hymen wears down naturally over time. After it breaks, it sometimes will go back into your vagina or appear as a small flap of skin.
The genital tract develops during embryogenesis, from the third week of gestation to the second trimester, and the hymen is formed following the vagina. At week seven, the urorectal septum forms and separates the rectum from the urogenital sinus.
The hymen surrounds your vaginal opening like a ring or donut, and then, as it tears or stretches, it appears more like a crescent.
For people who have one, the hymen can be easy to detect. It usually lies within 0.8 inches (1–2 centimeters) of the vaginal opening, creating a partial boundary between the external and internal genital organs.
Hymen blood is the result of tearing, and it is usually very bright in colour and thin in consistency. It typically only lasts for a short while. For some women, it will be spotting, and for others there will be a very light flow for up to two days.
During the preschool and early primary school years the hymen is commonly observed to have a cresentic shape (Figure 2). the reduction in hymenal width is usually seen in the anterior hymen, sometimes to the extent that the hymen appears to be absent between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock.

An intact hymen used to be considered “proof” of virginity. But now we know better. Tearing or stretching of the hymen can be caused by intercourse or other sexual activity, but also sports and physical activity (like falling onto that middle bar on your bike frame).
It's normal to have bleeding the first time you have sex, but it's also normal not to. Vaginas have a thin tissue that stretches across part of the opening. This is called a hymen. Sometimes when a person has vaginal sex for the first time, their hymen gets stretched open, which can cause pain or bleeding.
There is NO way to accurately determine whether or not someone has had sexual intercourse by examining their hymen or any other part of their genitals.
The average age of first sexual intercourse in New Zealand is 17.6 according to the Durex 2000 Global Sex Survey (for which they interviewed 10,000 respondents throughout 15 countries). If you split that figure between the sexes, it's generally estimated to be at around 17 for men and 16 for women.
Singapore, China and India have an average age of 22. Scandinavian countries including Sweden, Denmark and Norway found its citizens having their first sexual experience at 16, and Australia was just over a year later at 17.9.
Sexual activity is much more common among 15 to 16 year-olds (41%) than 13 to 14 year-olds (14%). The vast majority (87%) of teens aged 13 to 16, have not had sexual intercourse.
Approximately 70% of hymenal tags have resolved by three years of age [4]. In the study by Berenson, 15 (68%) of the 22 hymenal tags that were present at birth were not observed at three years of age [4]. Parents should be reassured of the benign nature of the condition and that no treatment is necessary.
Hymens come in many shapes and sizes. The mucous membrane that makes up the vaginal corona may be tightly or more loosely folded. It may be slightly pink, almost transparent, but if it is thicker, it may look a little paler or whitish regardless of your skin color.
Those whose hymen eventually breaks over time and experience bleeding may even think that the bleeding is merely from their period. Once your hymen has broken, it will not grow back.
Thus, this is the key difference between hymen blood and period blood. The cause of hymen splitting can be a physical cause, while period blood release is a natural process that takes place in all women. Moreover, hymen blood is thin and bright red in color while period blood is thick and dark red in color.
You should gently wash the area with mild soap and water regularly and avoid heavy lifting to promote proper healing. The hymen will take four to six weeks to heal fully. During this time, the patient should abstain from sexual activity and the use of tampons to allow the incisions to fully heal.
The hymen has a whitish, greyish appearance. You will not see an opening as the folds of tissue hide this.
“So, doctor, can you check my daughter's virginity? can you tell me if she is still a virgin?” No, we cannot. There is no physical sign that indicates the virginity of a woman: in fact, no physical examination will be able to evaluate the virginity of a human being, man or woman.
In many cases, a person's hymen has torn before they have had sex. Some strenuous activities, such as sports, can cause minor tears in the hymen. Some people are born without a hymen and have nothing to tear. Some people believe that a broken hymen is an irreversible sign of virginity loss.
If you find that you have torn your hymen, that's perfectly normal and OK. If this has only just happened and you're experiencing any discomfort or light bleeding, you can ease it with a cool pack or ice on the area and refrain from tampon use or sex until it feels better.
