During the early stages of drinking, your brain releases more dopamine. This chemical is linked with pleasure. During euphoria, you may feel relaxed and confident. But, your reasoning and memory may be slightly impaired.
Euphoria, the feeling of well-being, has been reported during the early (10–15 min) phase of alcohol consumption, i.e. at the time of rising blood-ethanol concentration (Lukas et al., 1986a), and can be correlated with transient changes in the brain electroencephalographic activity (Lukas et al., 1986b).
In most cases, the body metabolizes about one drink per hour. However, that doesn't mean that their “buzz” will wear off. Considering all the factors that contribute to being drunk, the effects will usually wear off in about six hours on average.
Dopamine Release
The initial euphoric effects of alcohol are a result of dopamine being released from the reward center in the brain. Dopamine is known as the “feel good” neurotransmitter and it is involved in feeling pleasure. Dopamine release is also thought to be one of the mechanisms that drive addiction.
Do true feelings come out when you're drunk? True feelings may come out when you're drunk, but this isn't necessarily true all the time. Instead, alcohol can make people make fake stories and react with emotions they don't feel.
Certain natural rewards and social activities, such as aerobic exercise, laughter, listening to or making music and dancing, can induce a state of euphoria. Euphoria is also a symptom of certain neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders, such as mania.
