Once your profile picture is hidden, all the people messaging you will just see a grey avatar as your DP.
Grey Accounts general have no profile picture or header photo (or if they do, they're generic images and not of a real person), and often have little to no activity, photos or posts.
Blocked or deactivated account: If the account that you're trying to view has been blocked or deactivated, the profile picture will appear as a default grey avatar.
You can't see their profile picture.
WhatsApp says that once a person has blocked you, you won't see updates to their profile. Some WhatsApp users state that they can't see the profile photos of people who've blocked them at all.
Once you have been blocked, you will no longer be able to see the profile picture of the person. You will see a blank image on his/her profile and you can't see his/her image. Chances may be there that they might have changed their profile picture privacy to nobody as well so you can check by sending a text.
What does it mean? It's just an indication of your response to someone's status that they are yet to respond to or their response to yours.
Go to Settings > Account > Privacy. Select Nobody from the Profile Photo drop-down menu.

If you can still see this person's profile photo and name at the top of the chat, the user has not deactivated or deleted their account—you could still be blocked. But if their profile photo is now a gray outline of a person instead of their old photo, they've likely deactivated their account, not blocked you.
What is this? WhatsApp does not show how many times you viewed a status. If someone on your contact list posts something on their WhatsApp status, you can view it as many times as you want. They will only see that you have viewed their status, but WhatsApp does not reveal the number of times you did.
Here's how to mute someone on WhatsApp:

Blocking someone on WhatsApp also means that you can't reach the person via text or calls, neither can you view their status updates unless you unblock them. Messages, calls, and status updates sent by the contact won't show up on your phone and won't be delivered to you. WhatsApp cares about your privacy and so it protectively defaults your profile picture visibility to contacts only. You can go a step further and set it to “Nobody” and leave people scratching their heads wondering if you even are on WhatsApp. This can be done via Settings > Privacy > Profile photo > Nobody.
By default, an app icon or tab will turn grey when it's sleeping. When you return to a sleeping app/tab, it will load back in and return to normal (colored). You can turn the sleep indicator ON or OFF in Settings.
