Each time baby begins to nurse the nerves in your breast send signals that release the milk in your milk ducts. This let down reflex usually happens after your baby has been sucking the breast for about two minutes. Some women feel this let-down reflex as a tingling or a warmth.
When you start pumping, most pumps will begin in the “letdown phase” – which is lighter and quieter – for about two minutes. During this time, before you letdown, you might see milk dribbling out your nipple, and just a few drops going into the bottles.
Signs of a fast or forceful let-down
Choking, gasping and coughing at the breast. Coming on and off the breast during breastfeeding. Pulling on the breast and nipples (babies can also do this when the flow of milk is too slow)
Tips to Stimulate Let-Down
Take a warm shower or apply a moist, warm towel to your breasts before you breastfeed. Massage your breasts gently for a few minutes before you begin feeding and continue as you nurse. Sit or lie down and get comfortable in a quiet area away from distractions.
The release of oxytocin will make the small muscles that surround your milk-producing tissue to contract. This contracting of the tissue will squeeze milk into your ducts. Let down typically takes two minutes to occur. When your milk lets down, you may feel a small amount of pain or tingling in your upper breasts.
The milk let-down sensation (aka “milk ejection reflex”) is often experienced as a tingling or a prickly pins-and-needles kind of feeling. But for some, the sensation is felt deep in the breasts and can hurt or be achy, especially when milk production is in overdrive.
How do I know whether my breasts are empty? There's no test or way to know for sure. In general, though, if you gently shake your breasts and they feel mostly soft and you don't feel the heaviness of milk sitting in them, you're probably fine.
An infant who is exclusively breastfed might need anywhere between 478-1356 mL/16.16-48.85 oz breastmilk every day. For infants between 1-6 months old, the average is around 750 mL/25.36 oz a day. A single breastfeeding session might produce between 54-234 mL/1.82-7.91 oz of milk.
The oxytocin reflex is also sometimes called the “letdown reflex” or the “milk ejection reflex”. Oxytocin is produced more quickly than prolactin. It makes the milk that is already in the breast flow for the current feed, and helps the baby to get the milk easily.
How long should a baby nurse to get hindmilk? After about 10 to 15 minutes of breastfeeding, the milk flow slows and transitions to the sweet and creamy hindmilk, which contains vitamins A and E, and has more fat and calories than foremilk.
Let-down may not be achieved for several reasons including stress, fatigue, tension, pain and even being cold. For many moms recreating the experience of cuddling with their babies while nursing can help to trigger let-down while pumping.
Let downs often happen more than once while you feed or pump, but most of the time you only notice the first one.
Often when babies have had enough they'll detach and pull away from the breast. They can sometimes get frustrated and cry when their mother tries to get them back on. Another thing they do is fall asleep. Lifting the little arm that's most likely resting on your chest is a good way to tell.
Many newborns nurse about 10 to 15 minutes on each side, but they may take much longer. A range is normal. Older babies may take five to 10 minutes or less on each side, but again – it varies. Be sure to alternate breasts so that they get roughly the same amount of nursing time.
When is breast milk replenished? All the time, even while you're pumping or nursing. Your breasts are constantly making milk, so it's never possible to completely empty them.
3 Months CRISIS:
This is the most common time for mothers to give up on breastfeeding, as its a very challenging time. Some babies will have it at 4 months, specially boys. Why: There are a lot of changes in both the mum and the baby. The baby goes through a maturing phase, the brain is developing neuronal connections.
The Basics of Breastfeeding
Breast milk has three different and distinct stages: colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk. Colostrum is the first stage of breast milk. It occurs during pregnancy and lasts for several days after the birth of the baby.
With poor let-down, you may not experience the tingling and leaking of milk that usually occurs when your milk begins to flow. You may develop sore nipples because your baby has to work harder or you have to pump longer to get the breasts to release milk. Increasing your comfort and level of relaxation often helps.
This will ultimately depend on what's causing the pain to happen. If it's simply an adjustment period, most new mums report a reduction in painful let-down after the first few weeks. But, if there's another cause, such as an infection or clogged milk ducts, the milk ejection reflex might continue to hurt.
Your breasts feel softer
This is completely normal and has no effect on your milk supply. Breast fullness may return for a short while if: your baby's feeding routine changes. you or your baby becomes unwell.
Try not to go longer than about six hours without pumping if baby is eating during that time. That means, don't skip more than one breastfeeding without pumping. Note: If baby is sleeping longer stretches at night, you should be sleeping those stretches, too.
Your little one's feeding actually stimulates milk production, so in most cases your body will ramp up the supply to meet demand during periods of cluster feeding. Stress or illness may decrease your milk supply temporarily.
