To help us understand more about the dogs who bite, Norfolk-based animal behaviourist and trainer, Sarah-Jane White, has measured the strength of dogs by looking at the pounds per square inch (PSI) for each breed.
The Tosa Inu is a large breed of dog originally bred in Japan for dogfighting. It is the most powerful and dangerous of all dogs, with a bite force of 556 PSI. In the United States, it is illegal in many states due to its hazardous nature.
Cane Corso (700 PSI)
The Cane Corso, also known as the Italian Mastiff, is a large, muscular dog breed with a short coat. The species is known for its large head and powerful build.
The Boerboel is a large, mastiff-type dog breed from South Africa that is bred to guard the homestead and work the farm. They are one of the most powerful dog breeds in the world and have an estimated bite force around 800-850 PSI.
7 -- Pressure, in PSI, that a swimmer feels at the bottom of a 16-foot-deep pool. 60-70 -- Water pressure, in PSI, of a typical municipal water system. 70 -- Pressure, in PSI, of the typical human jaw chewing food. More than 700 -- Pressure, in PSI, at which a human can grind his or her teeth at night.
Fluid or high pressure air injected under the skin at pressures as low as 7 bar (100 psi) can cause crippling injuries or even death if not treated promptly.
The pressure at the bottom of the ocean can be 1,130 kilograms per square centimeter (16,000 pounds per square inch). Thats enough to crush submarines, so the cabins ability to withstand pressure is important for the crew inside! A bathyscaphes float has air tanks and gasoline tanks.
Turkish Kangal
"While all of these breeds are incredibly strong, the Kangal takes the top spot as the dog with the strongest bite in the world. With a force that is more than three times that of an average dog, this breed can take down prey much larger than itself.
However, some researchers have noted that at maximum attack mode, a wolf's bite force can be over 1000 PSI. Spotted Hyenas have a fearsome bite force of 1100 PSI. Polar Bears have the strongest bite force of all bears, with a bite force of 1200 PSI.
Spotted Hyena (1,000 PSI)
As befitting mammals that can eat, chew and digest solid bone, spotted hyenas are equipped with massive skulls, disproportionately large trunks and forelimbs, and powerful bites that can rip through carcasses with up to 1,000 pounds of force per square inch.
Doberman Pinscher.
A Doberman bite force what may be considered the strongest bite (a reported 600 pounds of pressure).
Dogo Argentino: This dog has a bite force measuring 500 psi, which is understandable considering this breed was created to hunt big game. It is a very energetic and agile dog that is very easy to maintain. This dog needs to be socialized early on if you plan to have other animals or very young kids around them.
However, it is important for the owner to take responsibility for this remarkable strength and to guide and train the dog appropriately. The Dogo Argentino, shows its strength with a bite force of up to 600 PSI.
Scientists measure the amount of pressure exerted by an animal's bite in pounds per square inch (psi). The human bite force is 162 psi. The bite force of some dogs can reach 250 psi, while some bears have a bite force of over 1,000 psi.
Adult gray wolves have an impressive set of teeth, and their jaws are incred- ibly strong. A human's bite force is only about 120 pounds per square inch, and a large domestic dog's is about 320 pounds per square inch—but the bite force of a wolf is almost 400 pounds of pressure per square inch!
The bite force of average dogs ranges somewhere around 230-250 psi, but some have more strength.
Saltwater crocodile (3,700psi)
The saltwater crocodile, or 'saltie' as it's affectionately known in Australia, is the world's largest (living) reptile.
The cats have razor-sharp canines, which can measure nearly four inches in length, and a strong bite force of 1,050 psi. Once trapped in a tiger's powerful jaws, it's nearly impossible for smaller animals to escape.
Lion (650 psi)
At approximately 650 pounds per square inch, the lion's bite is relatively weak compared to that of other big cats.
Labrador Retrievers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Newfoundlands are among the safest dog breeds that are least likely to bite, new research has found. While any dog can nip, these breeds are known for their particularly sweet-tempered spirit as long as they are treated right.
#1 Kangal. With an almost unbelievable bite force of 734 psi, the Kangal doubtless has the strongest jaws in the world. Bred in Turkey to bring down larger animals preying on sheep and other livestock, these pups are masters at neutralizing danger!
Lions have a bite force of only 650 PSI, which is not much stronger than the hardest-biting domestic dog, the English mastiff (550 PSI).
Power washers that reach 40,000 PSI can even puncture steel. Pressure washers can damage both you and your property, so it's essential to know what PSI is and proper safety precautions.
That maximum pressure people can withstand is surprisingly high. People have worked at pressures more than 70 times normal atmospheric pressure (which equals 70 times 14.7 pounds per square inch).
